Remington 788 Value?

the reloading and all gun work was performed by a very competent gun smith........

He couldn't have been that competent, or he would have figured it out and fixed it.

.........a lot of these rifles seemed to have some troubles of sorts.the chamber was not rusted/pitted either it was brand new in box from rem.

I have owned a number of them over the years, and know a few guys who had them as well, and never heard of such a problem.

Great gun! Like so many people, one of the most accurate guns I have ever owned was a 788 in 22-250. Used it for coyotes in the 1970's and pretty much paid for my university with it. HOWEVER, in a moment of lust after a custom made muzzle loader, it and it's K-10 Weaver were traded at Klondike arms around 1980 or so. I kick myself every time I think about it. I know have a custom stocked 788 in 222 with a Leupold 4.5-14. Lovely gun.

You should not sell it. 222 is a great caliber to load for.

Years ago I bought a 788 in 22-250. The finish on the barrel was faded and had rust pits. The bore was pitted and dark. The stock was stripped of its finish and a coat of varnish in it place. It looked like a piece of junk but I knew these rifles have a reputation for accuracy. So I bought it, cleaned it up, refinish the stock, bedded the action and fore end and lightly lapped the 9 locking lugs. This rifle does 1/4" groups at 100 yards for the first 5 shots with factory winchester 55gr and my own reloads. It groups better than my target rifle.

I bought a Remingtom M788, 22 " barrel, in .308 in 1979 in Canadian tire in Barrie for $279.00. Probably the best hunting rifle I ever owned. I made a 450 yard, one shot, heart shot on a 6 point mulie buck with it. Couldn't beat it for accuracy.
