I've owned a couple, a .222 and a .308. They were decent enough. I really liked the .222. One of the issues with the 788 is the stock. They are old guns and the wood stocks are both brittle and prone to warping. There are however replacement stocks for them if you have one that has issues.

Fast lock times and great accuracy. Makes for a great combo no matter what the gun. They are selling for way too much right now though when you can go and get a Savage package gun that will shoot just as well for a hundred+ less than a 788.

One thing about this purchase of mine was, that I wanted something in .222 as I have ammunition, dies and brass for this caliber. No Savage available that I could find.

I was delighted to find one for $399 in such good condition. :)

custom stock in 30-30

I have one in 30-30 that someone put a custom stock on, and did a nice enough job and my other is in 222 also in walnut as it was a first year of production rifle. Either of these could be had for the right offer. FS

I have two 788's. Worth the little extra because of what they are, not because you can get something else cheaper. Designed by Wayne Leek back in the day.
I have a .222 converted to .223 and a 22-250 I'm converting to 7.62x39 for my deer rifle.
BTW, Ken Farrel makes nice one piece steel Picatinny rails for them and you can get them in low profile if requested. I just had one come in today. Nice base. :)
