im looking at a new remington 798 for my first scoped deer rifle whats everyones opinion on these rifles bass pro has them on sale occasionly for $550 and im planning to add a decent scope to the gun also thinking of getting it in ethier 30-06 or .270 but more likely the .270.

anyone?

add the price of bases & rings, and you are up in the $630 Ruger Hawkeye price range which are stainless throughout, come with their own QR rings and integral bases, and have a bit better fit/finish than the 798 SPS.

if you are in Ontario you can order the Hawkeye from LeBaron - it ships from Quebec and you only pay GST, no PST. the Hogue stocked Hawkeye for $680 is a worthwhile upgrade since the upgraded stock will cost you $150+ if you buy it separately.

thanks for the replies i already love the feel of the stock on the 798 so i dont thnik i would upgrade im planning to buy a weatherby in .300 win mag soon after so im just looking for something intermidiate for the deer sounds like a good choice:dancingbanana:

I saw one of these rifles today at P&D for the first time I thought it was good value for the money, tried the trigger and it was a little creepy, but not unacceptable. The stock seemed to hold the barreled action nicely. I thought it has a very nice feel for a rifle that retails around $550.00. FS
