Remington 798

Off to the 'gun store' today to pick up a set of Leupold STD bases and rings for the 798. I have a cheap Bushnell scope here I will try initially, since I cannot decide what to scope it with at this point. I wonder how many scope parts will be liberated by the first few rounds of 7mm Rem mag...

Given the caliber, what suggestions would anyone have for scoping this gun. I am considering a VX2 in 1-4x20 for our bush country, but the 7mm can also be a long range shooter.

i have a rem 798 laminate stocked 7mm rem mag and i love it. this year i took a nice buck at 234 yards on a dead run with my son and coworker looking on. its hard not to fall in love with a rifle that works for you. of course the hardest part of making a shot like that is pretending you can do it all the time. the rings are leopold as well as the vxII 3x9 scope. my load is 67g of rl22 and a 140g nosler bt. the entire rifle including sling was just over 1200.00. i also have an interarms mark x in 308 win, that other than stock is identical. both rifles will shoot under an inch if i do my part. on a trivial note, zastavia, my bosnian friend tells me means red flag. i have always had a soft spot for mausers of any brand and currently own three brno's and a winchester m54 as well.

First impressions are good. The walnut stock, while not the best grain of walnut I have seen, is very nicely shaped and is well finished. Bedding may be necessary, but I won't know until I take it out to the range. I now have a Redfield 3-9x50 on the way to be mounted in Leupold's STD system. RCBS dies are in hand and I am ready to load some initial test rounds. The barrel is very nicely blued and is the nicest looking part of the gun. It is, however, on the light side so this is definitely not a range gun, but rather a hunting piece. I think it will become fairly warm after only a few shots or so and will have to cool off for a while between shooting sessions. Hope to have it on paper by week's end.

So what are people's impressions of the life span of magnum belted cases. Some would have us believe that they are only good for 2 or 3 firings, with conventional dies, before the area immediately above the belt swells to the point where it will no longer chamber since a die cannot fully resize this area. Anyone experience this phenomenon? I hope my RCBS 7mm Rem mag dies are up to the task in the long term here...

Big part for this is the pressure level you will for your reloads. In an other hand, there are belt resizer dies availlable.

Baribal,

Yes, I have seen these on line for sale by the gentleman who developed them. I hope I will not need to go this route, since I seldom if ever get even close to a maximum load in any of my handloads.
Do you have experience with this collet style belted magnum die?

Woodlotowner,
The stories of short life of belted cartridges is mostly BS. The so-called belt resizing dies are the answer to a question nobody asked.
Properly sized and loaded belted brass will last just like rimless brass. If the rifle is sound and locks at the front of the bolt, this should equate to about 20 firings or so. Regards, Bill.

Wow. I should never have handled that brand new Winchester Model 70 mauser 96 action in the gun store a couple of days ago. What a magnificent rifle that is! Anyway, I am still enamoured of the 798. The Redfield is mounted and I am ready to actually shoot the thing...

I don't have a Remington 798 but I do have a Charles Daly with the same Zastava made action. I also have a Zastava M70 PSS on order which is the same commercial 98 action but in stainless steel. I think the Zastava made commercial 98's are very good guns for the money. They are made from quality steels and are reasonably well finished. It's hard to beat the 98 action for reliability.

Where did you order the ss version? How much are they and what is the delivery time? PM me if you prefer...thanks.

I'm calling it a Mauser 96 since it is controlled feed without the third locking lug at the rear of the bolt. The one I (should never have) handled is in SS finish and chambered in 7mm WSM. It was marked down from $1,100 to $645. I didn't buy it. Did I screw up? I mean, I'm quite adequately covered in 7mm...

Don't buy it! PM me they're name address and phone # and I'll take care of the problem today.

My Zastava M70 PSS was ordered through Epps Sporting Goods in Oct. Hopefully it will be here sometime in Jan. or Feb. Once I get the rifle I will post a reveiw for anyone interested.

#### on closing too ? lol

yeah I think you have the 7's covered as far Magnums go.

I picked up the 798 in .375 H&H and just got back from my first trip to the range. I tried out 8 loads ranging from 235gr spires, 270 Barnes X and 300gr Norma SP, all over Varget loads from the book not going closer that one Gr shy of max load.

The first thing I did was chip off all the black stuff on the trigger adjustment screws and void my warrantee. The result is a 2pm pull with zero creep. I used some Remington 270 gr factor loads to sight it in and then off to the races.

The rifle feeds beautifully, I had to take a sharp edge off the follower that was catching on the brass but it just required a light buff with some fine water paper, no major surgery.

I have the 235grs settling into about 1 1/2 inch at 100 meters.
It didn't like any of my 270gr Barnes X loads, they ranged from 2 to 3 inches.
The last tested was the 300gr Norma SP, by this point my shoulder was a quivering mass as it had suffered through 35 rounds off the bench but I was rewarded with a very pretty 1/2 inch group at 100 meters.

Love the rifle, factory sights have to go but once I figure out what scope to put on it I won't be using them beyond backup. Action was a little rough out of the box but the more you use it the smoother it gets.

Happy hunting.
