Remington 870 any good for hunting?

Hi guys. This week I'm going to pick up an 870, probably from the store at the gun club. I want one because they seem to be quite cheap and popular. I mostly just would like one to build my collection and to shoot some trap at the range, but if these shotguns are decent enough for bird hunting I might consider that in the future.

Has anyone hunted with an 870, and what was your experience like?

With over 10 million in use. I am going to take a stab in the dark here and say yes it is great for hunting. I have an old Wingmaster 870 that points great and cycles great. It is the cadillac of pump shotguns.

Yes, I've owned a few shotguns and I always go back to my 870.

That is what it was designed to do. Trap/skeet personal defence etc just another feather in their cap.

You wont be dissapointed. Thats what they were built to do, and they do it well. Dont just stop at birds. Many deer and moose have been taken with the 870 as well

More like the Yugo of shotguns. Not a big fan. Especially the newer ones.

Get yourself an older 870 wingmaster, learn it, pattern it and go and have fun.

I think I would want a reliable Shotgun for bear defense. Probably a SxS.

If you are speaking of a 870 wingmaster they are the most reliable of the new age meaning since 1951 if you mean an express manufactured since the late 70's early 80's they have quality control issues and are overall crudely finished . That being said they are a step above most of the imports and other low end guns that they compete with in the market place.

Do not get a new 870 3.5" super mag. They have poor chambers and the shells tend to stick. Get a 3" magnum and you should be fine.

My uncle is a huge rifle and shotgun collector, and has been hunting for 30+ years. I recently asked him for advice on a shotgun. He told me that if he could choose just one gun to enter the woods with, it would be his 870. I believe him, and plan to pick one up as well. He said the pumps are the best because the semi-auto ones like to jam, and are fussy about what shells they use. I can't attest to how true this is but I would take his word for gold any day.
