My uncle is a huge rifle and shotgun collector, and has been hunting for 30+ years. I recently asked him for advice on a shotgun. He told me that if he could choose just one gun to enter the woods with, it would be his 870. I believe him, and plan to pick one up as well. He said the pumps are the best because the semi-auto ones like to jam, and are fussy about what shells they use. I can't attest to how true this is but I would take his word for gold any day.
If I were you I would pick up an older one before one of the newer ones as the newer ones are becoming known for having issues and in my own experience are rather picky themselves.
