Remington 870 any good for hunting?

My uncle is a huge rifle and shotgun collector, and has been hunting for 30+ years. I recently asked him for advice on a shotgun. He told me that if he could choose just one gun to enter the woods with, it would be his 870. I believe him, and plan to pick one up as well. He said the pumps are the best because the semi-auto ones like to jam, and are fussy about what shells they use. I can't attest to how true this is but I would take his word for gold any day.

If I were you I would pick up an older one before one of the newer ones as the newer ones are becoming known for having issues and in my own experience are rather picky themselves.

There are ALOT of elitists on the this form...90% of them hang out in this section. Yes an 870 is great for hunting. An older Wingmaster is a GREAT shotgun and can be had for under $500 on the EE. The newer Express' work too they are just not as smoothed out or pretty but you can't beat the price..add a little know how and elbow grease if you want and you can smooth them out yourself.

Looks are NOT everything in a shotgun unless you spend more time shooting the breeze and talking about how great your guns are then actually shooting at a gun club. And finally yes you can get an amazing shotgun to put to use that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Well put!
My expensive English SXS guns rub elbows in the gun vault with Remington Express pumps and "hardware store" type Belgian guns.
it's all good!!:D

I spent yesterday clay shooting (hand throw) on a friend's property. I took all my 3 shotguns, my $2000 Italian side-by-side, my new Beretta 400 Xplor Unico Kick Off (also around $2000) and my 870 Express ($400). first time ever trying 870 for clay shooting. I used Win. Expert target 2 3/4 shells.

In every corner, my Express outshot the other two! Even though for a time, I was doing the throwing myself. In all fairness, it could be because I have practiced (not clay) with the 870 a lot more and I mean a lot. Notwithstanding, my 2 years old 870 (2 3/4 - 3") never stops amazing me. what an amazing design 870 is! Pity it is a Remington production.

That does not necessarily mean that the express is a better gun, but it may be that the Remington fits you better.

They work and work well. Keep the exterior well oiled and it will most likely outlive you. In order to have sold over 10 million, you have to have a product that deliver's for the price.
