I'm looking for my first shotgun and thinking of getting a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum. Everywhere seems to be sold out, is this a seasonal thing because of hunting season? Or is there some sort of supply chain issue that's preventing retailers from stocking it?

I would say it is a bit of both.

Also, with Remington going bankrupt, consider other makes. Who knows if parts will be even around in the future, or buy2 or 3 of the same model for parts ;)

You know what … hadn’t even considered that! Maybe I’ll look for something else. What’s the recommendation for versatile pumps these days?

Been doing some more reading and apparently they’re making guns again now post bankruptcy? Not sure if that actually endangers parts availability for the future at all in that case.

Last week I was hunting with a few friends and they all had Mossbergs. I was the only one with 870, and since I dont have much experience with Mossbergs, I talked to them and they all liked their Mossbegs. They were using 500 and 535.

Their guns were noticeably lighter than my 870 and theirs had scopes while mine is iron sights. Both are about same quality, so if you decide on Mossberg, you should be satisfied, just remember both 870 Rem and 500/535 Mossberg are no nonsense, bout average quality shotguns many hunters use with great success. Nothing fancy about them, they simply put meet in the freezer..

You cant go wrong with and 870, these have been around since the 1950s , there are millions of these in use all-over the world , and tons of manufacturers who produce literally every replacement part You will ever need.

I don't see anything going wrong with these for the average weekend warrior, the most you might need to replace would be an extractor/ejector, and iam talking after possibly 10k rounds.

The 870 design is tried, tested and true, the 870 will last the average person a lifetime of use.

Some new production Remarms 870s have made it into Canada. But supply is still sparse and slow ....

Spare parts will be available again from Remarms .... it is just a matter of time now.

I just sent an email to Gravel Agency inquiring about when it will be possible to order spare parts again.

The 870 has been produced since the 1950's. There are tens of millions of them on the planet. There is no chance we will run out of parts ... EVER.

Don't be silly. The 870 is an excellent choice. It is the small block chevy of the pump shotgun world.

I've had my 870 since the mid 80's and it has never failed or broken a part. I fully expect it to last me another 30 years.

I had a Mossberg 500 back around the same time I bought the 870. Didn't really gel w the Mossberg.

Remington went out of business and all that remains is old stock or used ... my opinion the 870 is the best pump shotgun ever made if you find a decent one used buy it you will not be disappointed

Correction ..... the situation has changed in the last couple of weeks ..... several dealers have now new production Remarms 870s in stock .... especially the new Fieldmaster. Check out Prophet River or Epps for example .....

.

The 870 Express is not nearly as refined as a 870 Wingmaster.

I have had both and if you pick up and swing them both you will see what I mean.

A Wingmaster with a light contour barrel is a sweet shotgun.

Parts will not be a problem, aftermarket accoutrements are plentiful.

What is the saying around here? - Buy once cry once.

There are currently next to no spare parts currently available and haven’t been for a couple of years. I have an old Wingmaster that I’d like to put back into service that someone did a poor job of trying to replace the ejector and ejector spring. Can’t find an ejector or ejector spring anywhere. Even if I could the rivets are nowhere to be found.

Want to update an old Wingmaster with a Flex Tab? Good luck.

Now that RemArms are putting out product it’s only a matter of time before spare parts are once again available but to claim parts will always be available is not realistic.

There’s an ejector and rivet’s on the ee, no spring though.
