Remington 870 barrel problems

Anyone else here purchase a new 870 recently? The reason I'm asking is because a young hunter I've been taking duck hunting for the last few years finally turned 18 and wanted to purchase a shotgun. He wanted my Browning Gold 3-1/2" but I said no so I told him to save a little money and get the 870 Express Super Magnum in composite. I figured the pump would be a little more versatile and more reliable.

Boy was I wrong! His 870 has a failure to eject the first round everytime he's had it out. It seams the brass is sticking in the barrel. I've taken his fired/stuck case and it fits my Browning with little trouble.

Now we're both using the Remington Nitro-Steel 3-1/2" shells and the Winchester Express 3" and 3-1/2" and he's getting the same problem with both ammo mfg's.

Funny thing is the 3" shells do not stick in my 3" 870 barrel.

Is it that the new Remington's have cheaply made barrels?

We took it back to Lebaron's where he purchased it and he was told it just need to be cleaned and it the problem happen again to bring it back for service. The gun has been used 3 time this hunting season so far, how dirty can it be. You should be able to throw it in the lake, pick it up and fire it without any problems.

Does this thing need the barrel reamed out?

notenough, My buddy Ian just bought a 3.5 870 Express Super Mag in Composite...

He HAS had his gun jam on the 3 inch winchester shells that I use for ducks, but the 3.5 inch shells of the same manufacturer work NO PROBLEM!!! WIERD coincidence with your situation!!! The shells he has used are the Federal 3 inch #2's and Winchester xpert 3.5 inch with NO PROBLEM...

We "traded" two of my 3 inch #4's for him to try, so I could try one of his 3.5 #3's and that was when he had his "Jam" with my shell... He gave me back my remaining shell and went back to his 3.5 inchers!!! Hasn't had a problem since...

Ammo issues???

Cheers
Jay

I took my new 870 Express to the range on Saturday and also had jamming issues. The first 3 boxes went through fine (Winchester 2 3/4 shells) but the next box (Remington 2 3/4) wouldn't load or eject properly. I'm going to screw the terminology up completely, but here it goes: the range officers (both who own 870s) determined that the nut cap that screws onto the end of the tube to keep the barrel on wasn't connecting to the plug in the end of the tube. On the new 870s there is a plug with teeth that hooks into the nut cap. Once we got that plug to move back to the end of the tube, it fed fine for the rest of the day. I attribute it just to it being a new gun.

so the barrel was floating between the reciever and the unseated magazine cap?

secondgen, That's what it sounds like to me... But I think that this would be OBVIOUS and even a newbie to shotguns would notice this IMMEDIATELY!!!

Cheers
Jay
WE NEED PICS!!!

I'll see whether I can get some pics together tonight or tomorrow. I wouldn't say the barrel was floating. I double checked my terminology on the Remington site and the 870 owner's manual. The magazine cap screws onto the magazine tube. There are threads on the cap, but also a set of teeth. There is a matching set of teeth on the magazine spring retainer. The spring retainer is supposed to extend slightly past the end of the magazine tube so that after you thread the magazine cap on, when the teeth engage they make a sort of "ratcheting" noise. Because the magazine spring retainer was stuck in the magazine, I'm assuming something was up with the spring causing the shells not to feed and become stuck. Also, the barrel was still attached because of the threads and not floating, but was constantly needing to be retightened.

I hope that explains things a little better.

Calgaryshooter, you explained that exceptionally in your last post.

I've seen this problem with new 870's before and corrected it by polishing the chamber and eliminating any burrs left behind from poor QC. The chambers I've seen in new Express models have been quite rough.
Pay particular attention to burrs around the notch under the barrel hood where the locking block locks up to the barrel, (very sharp edges remain in this area from machine cuts), the locking block itself and most of the sharp edges cut into the barrel in and around the chamber. Look for a broken or chipped extractor, or broken extractor spring. Make sure the barrel is seated tight against the receiver and locked in tight by the magazine cap holding it in place.

In the end, a very light FP10 lubrication will help a new gun break in smoothly.

Typical of LeBaron to tell you to clean it just to be rid of you. Bet they hope you don't come back as they don't have a damn clue how to begin imagining where the problem might be.

I have only had problems with 2 3/4" Challenger rounds, these are the cheap target rounds, nothing else has jammed this gun. The brass ring actually came off where the ejector grabs it, this problem occured more when it was brand new.

all i can say is ive worked on 100,s of 870s and yes the express is the cheaper gun but the 870 is the 2nd best shotgun on the market for everyday use
but buy a marine magnum of one of the turkey guns if you want a better gun
cheap shotgun ammo in a cheper gun is just asking for problems

I picked up a new 870 (18" barrel bear buster :p) at wholesale as a birthday present to myself.

Put 500 2 3/4 shells though it last wends, not a single problem, put it away dirty. Took it to the range yesterday and ran another 150 shells though it, not a single hiccup. Cleaned it all out today and can't wait to get my hands on some leftover pumpkins for my next shooting session.

I've had a 870 express for years and fired ####loads of round of all types without a problem.

Well all is for not. The kid had this week off from school and went hunting Wednesday morning and was rear-ended by a pickup truck. He's OK, the car was totaled and the shotgun was in the trunk, which was totaled. Only problem was so was my shotgun since he wasn't sure if his would actually work.

I feel kind of bad because if he's placed at fault for the accident he's out the cost of his car, 2 shotguns, my marine battery (electric motor) and the other vehicle damages.

Insurance will cover everything if he's not at fault. I don't think he'll be able to drive another car anytime soon since insurance will go through the roof.

It's a good thing I have another 2 12 gauge shotguns to go hunting this weekend or I'd really have to kick his ass.

Man... I've not had any problems with my Rem 870 super mag shooting over 300 rounds of 2.75", 3" and 3.5". Never a jam, FTF, anything. Smoothing sailing all the way. I DO polish all my receiver and action bar rails, cut the slide lock so the slide will come back if you are pulling on it when you pull the trigger, etc. I don't really think it helps reliability, but I have not had one problem at all. I bought my super mag about 6 months ago and it had just arrived to the gun store.

Strange... I'll see how my 12.5" Dlask 3.5" barrel works on my receiver too. Videos shortly......

BBB, the shotgun was a Browning Gold 3-1/2" Stalker. I have to get the receiver checked out because both guns may be salvageable but then again I'm not a gunsmith. I'll also want to see what the insurance company say's about replacing the products before I start selling them off. I know for sure that the Browning barrel is toast and his 870 has one broken part in the receiver. Both stocks are broken and the 870 is suffering from acid burns since a battery blew up beside it so the finish is suffering.
