I am a new hunter looking into purchasing an 870 for turkey hunting this spring.I am unsure of the barrel I should choose when I buy it.The gun comes with a 28” vent rib barrel with a modified Rem-Choke tube.I was wondering, is fine to shoot geese and crows with that barrel useing steel shot? How many shots can this gun handle before you have to replace the barrel?

most turkey chokes can't handle steel, because of the tight rate of constriction. sometimes as tight as.075. the other problem with a choke that tight, you would have a very difficult time hittnig your crow or goose if they weren't sitting on the ground or water.

What I would do is drop down to a 26inch barrel,it will be a little better for turkey (shorter barrel) and you can still use it for Geese/ducks and crows with no issues.
Buy a extra full turkey choke for hunting those big birds(turkey) and the modified can handle the rest.

As for your question How many shots can this gun handle before you have to replace the barrel?
That I do not know but all I do know is that I have a 1987 wingmaster and a 1989 express and I think the wing has had about 5000-7000 rounds through it if not more and the express has had about 3000-4000 though it and as long as you keep them clean there are no problems.

I hope this helps.

That helped alot thank you very much. The gun comes with the 28" barrel,is a longer barrel going to be more accurate? Can you shoot buckshot with the Mod. Choke?

The longer barrel just gives you a better sight picture..although I and Im sure others here have killed critters with shorter barrels ( I have a 21in barrel on my 870 - 28in in the wingmaster) Yes you can shoot buckshot with the mod choke as well

I am a first time hunter as you know,If I am shooting moving targets with the mod choke and 28" will it take a lot of practice to hit anything?

I have a 21" Barrel on mine. The sightiing is not an issue as I have red dot mounted as well. When you add on the turkey choke It moves out to 23" but is still manuverable in the woods.

Umm...well it depends...a good thing to do is go shoot either sporting clays or skeet...i shot skeet for the first time a few weeks ago and the people there were very helpful in helping me out..Also try a game of trap

sounds like you have the same as mine, 870 express with the same set up. I bought the turkey choke from S.I.R. along with an improved cyl choke, but the others are right the mod will do fine for all other critters. In fact mine came with the rifle barrel and I just stopped using it as I found the other barrel was fine for anything I was hunting.

even for waterfowl,if it's in your budget, you may find an improved cylinder choke tube with #4 steel shot is your best choice if your hunting a closed in "tight" area where the shots are inside 30 yards. but wing shooting takes practise regardless of what your shooting at. an improved cylinder choke tube is worth having. good luck and good hunting.

thanks a lot for everyones help and replies. How do you delete the thread once you`ve obtained the information you wanted?

Everything needs practice, practice, practice. :shotgun::shotgun:
I dont think there are really any natural born shooters out there.
It is a tool you have to learn how to use it. But it is alot of fun learning.
