Hey all,

I am looking into buying a different choke for my shotgun, Im just not sure which one to buy! i use it for waterfowl (canada goose and ducks). Right now i have the stock choke that came with the gun. not sure which one would be good as there are so many models! i was told a extended full would be ideal for what i was hunting?

Thanks

Have a look at the patternmaster decoy code black . they are a wad retarding choke and work extremely well with steel shot under 1550 ft/s .

If you are looking for a new choke try a Kicks high flyer. It comes in mod and full. Take a look at their website. Lots of info on them.

I shoot a mod out of my 870 and its great!

You can take down a duck or goose with any choke at 40ft. Dont fix what's not broken!

To clarify I shoot the kicks high flyer mod choke. Not the factory Rem mod choke. It gives me a nice pattern out to 40 yards (120ft)

thats exactly what I'm trying to do! i aint trying to fix anything, i shoot just fine! and it gets me waterfowl i was just curious as i feel i could be more effective!

Look into kicks chokes. I was in the same boat as you. Shot good patterns and killed birds but I knew it could be better so I bought a high flyer. I still need to pattern it with different loads but the winchester xpert steel 3" #2's I've shot out of it work well.

If you want more improvement, try different loads. I've heard kent faststeel 1 1/4oz 3" #1s are an awesome load and pattern well.

im shooting 3 inch 2 shot and max 45-50ft

If your shooting Geese that close try some smaller shot and the Modified choke.
The smaller pellets will pass through the feathers a little easier than the larger pellets.
Shot density is the key along with knowing the pattern of your ammo/choke combo.

So, after reading my reply and your question what if any troubles are you experiencing?
If you are missing your lead is to far ahead or you are to far behind, might wanna add some
more information for the others to help diagnose your quest.

Just what I tried yesterday Winchester Xpert 3" #2
I also went on kicks website and there are. 2 choices and I don't seem to see that it's compatible for the 870?

Def interesting! I'm going to go see my friend who's a gunsmith who knows a lot see what he says and reading info on here then il see

At those ranges, an extended light modified or skeet 2 would be one of my first choices, although I'd also be tempted to get and try an improved modified choke. As far as brand goes I don't really have a favorite.

40 ft is a lot closer that what most people experience when shooting waterfowl. Most of us are shooting at 3 times the distance (eg 40 yards). Are you sure of the distance? If what you say is true, you need a more open choke, say an improved cylinder - your gun was originally supplied with a modified choke. At this short distance, you really don't need one of the fancy extended chokes! When you get your distances sorted out, try patterning your gun at a stationary target at the same distance - you'll get an idea of the size and quality of the pattern.

SHOTGUN BARREL ALTERATIONS FOR STEEL SHOT

Forcing Cone Alteration:

Factory shotgun barrels usually have a fairly short and abrupt forcing cone. The forcing cone is the tapered area just ahead of the chamber where the shell is contained. Altering the forcing cone, so it is one and one half or two inches in length, reduces recoil and improves the pattern density. Trap shooters and skeet shooters have been doing this for many years. It is a good benefit to the steel shot user as well.

Choke Alteration:
Choke designation from the tightest to the most open are:
Extra Full, Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Skeet II, Improved Cylinder, Skeet I, and Cylinder Bore.

Steel shot does not require the constriction that lead shot needs, to produce good patterns. In fact too much constriction, causes poor, erratic patterns, and in some cases, permanently damages the barrel.
I have seen barrels bulged at the choke, I have seen barrels where the choke split right open, from using steel shot.

For steel shot, with thin barrels, chokes should be altered to at least Skeet II. Often, over & under, and side-by-side shotguns, are best altered to Skeet I and Skeet II chokes. Heavier barrels can be left at Modified choke but may see an improvement in the pattern if opened slightly.

theres no way a modified choke is hitting birds at 40 meters….(and taking them down at least)I'm pretty sure its 40ft! regardless with a more open choke my spread will be wider at a farther distance… i just want a tighter choke then the modified one i already have! but not a full? I'm guessing there is a extended modified or so?
