Was wondering what people think of the different Remington 870 DM models that are now available in Canada and are they satisfied with those purchased, also how do they compare to other detachable mag shotguns that they have used.

I’ve handled one at Reliable Gun earlier in the year, it was pretty nice. Fit and finish was in line with any newer 870, the mag seats and released nicely. I can only compare it to the DA mag fed grizzly in which the mag is the weak link, the 870DM mag seems way nicer. On the DM with an empty mag inserted you can close the bolt and cycle the action which is an improvement over the mag fed grizzly, on an empty mag the follower blocks the bolt from closing. Overall it’s lighter than the grizzly which is nothing new, I’d buy one if I was looking for another mag fed pump. As it’s a Rem 870 it will always have parts and aftermarket support and I wouldn’t be surprised if higher capacity mags become available for it down the road, I can’t say the same with all the Turkish mag fed 12g’s out there.

The Mossberg looks and feels way better than the Remington.

10 round (and even 20 round) mags are readily available.

Remington only has 6 round mags.

The Mossberg mags are double stack mags compared to the Remington which are single stack. However the Mossberg mags are quite bulky and expensive, 10 round is $169 while the 20 round is $219. The Remington 6 round costs $40, there is a also a 3 round mag, but I have not been able to find a price on them.

How crazy is that, how can they charge $169 and $219 for the 10 and 20 round mags, I looked into the pricing when these were first launched and couldn't believe it

I've been thinking of scoring one of these 870 DM models and putting my old 870 Express back together in its duck hunting configuration.

Mine currently is set up with a Dlask rail to mount my scopes, Leupold 1x Prismatic scope, 14" Dlask barrel and like posted in the picture above orange Magpul butt stock and forend.

Doesn’t take 3” shells.

Looks and “feel” are subjective. Honestly, the Mossberg is the most gimmicky of the two. It appeals to those who bought the “chainsaw” or the other Mossberg gimmicks. Not bad shotguns, it’s just how they market them.

Overall the Remington is the more durable mag design. One good fall and that expensive 20rd mag is toast. And I don’t know why someone would feel “under-gunned” with six rounds of 3” magnum.

Depends what you want to do. If I’m looking for a shotgun to take to the range and do some high capacity rapid fire dirt shooting. I’d go Mossberg.

Not a Rem fan boy... but the 870 DM design is better thought out. To me it looks like Mossberg caught wind that Remington was making a detachable mag shotgun so they followed suit and rushed the design to keep up. Then they marketed the crap out of it.

It seems that Mossberg did not actually develop the double stack mags used with the 590M, since they are supplied by Adaptive Tactical which might be one of reasons they are so expensive, also they will not handle 3" shells and there are restrictions on some types of 2 3/4 inch shells as well. I think the advantage of detachable mag shotguns is the ease of loading and unloading, also safer. One version of the Remington 870 dm is the "Little Beaver two" from Gravel the Canadian distributor for Remington, also Dlask has also built compact shotguns using the 870 dm. A good review of the Remington and Mossberg mag fed shotguns is "https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2018/6/21/remington-s-870-dm-mossberg-s-590m/"

How exactly is the Mossberg magazine less durable?

The 20 round mags are huge and might not be practical, but at least with the Moss you still have the option of 10 or 15 rounders.

I went with the Remington dm. The spare mags cost me 30$ each which seemed more reasonable then the mossberg ones. As for the gun the mags do not drop free takes a bit of force inserting and removing mags. Work fine when seated.

Not the magazine itself... look how it attaches to the receiver. There is no magwell

Yeah, but it doesn't need a magwell because of the design. That's like saying the AR is a better design than the AK because the AK has no magwell. It's not bad, it's just different.

Anyone else used the 870 DM? Mostly how is the function with the mag well and mags ?

I actually prefer Mossberg shotguns but the Mossberg mags are really expensive and I need about 10 of them. 5/6 round magazines are fine with me.

The 870 mags seem a bit tougher to source, too.
