I am in the market for an 870 Express as a general utility gun for Waterfowl, Turkeys and Deer, maybe some clays. I allready own a 23" Tru-Glo turkey barrel that can double for slugs aswell, so I need an 870 with a 28" barrel.

I am wondering weither I should buy a 3" mag or a 3.5" SuperMag? I would invest in a set of Hogue Overmolded stocks so at least i'd have a good recoil pad to soften the recoil either way. Have people been having problems with the 870 Supermags 3.5" or is it pretty much as reliable and good as a regular 3" magnum??

What do you think, should I get a 3" or 3.5" for my needs??? Thanks

i dont know what i could do with a 3 1/2 that i already do with a 3. But then again, i have never shot 3 1/2. I use a Pattern Master choke for waterfowling and kill birds, well, quite a distance. but then again i have been shooting for 35 years.

I am always wary of new generation stuff like 3 1/2 inch mag, 270 WSSM, etc etc etc. Manufacturers are constantly vying against each other and prying into your wallet for thier share of the market place. A 3030 will kill a deer at 100 yards if the shot is well placed. Lead a bird correctly, follow through, know your distance and you will kill birds.

stay with a 3 inch. save your money. the ammo costs are unjustified. just MHO.

(hang on now, we are likely going to learn something in posts hereafter)

The 3.5 will allow you to use 3.5" ammo if needed but you can still use anything smaller as well. They were at one time having ejection issues, as long as that has been resolved, why not buy the 3.5? Unless you want to save a few bucks.

there is not tat much diff in pice beween the two anmore so whynot go forthe threeand a half .ijst loe the three and a hlf for turkyes ad use the three inh shels f ducksand geese a shorter shells for rabbits nd groues no problems with my gun it shots them all DUTCH

The only important question is whether you plan on using 3.5" shells. So it's not so much a question of what gun should you get, its a question of what ammo you should use.

I owned/hunted with both. The only difference I found was extra recoil/expense, you can't get much deader than dead..
Its more about the shooter/choke/ammo combination than much else- but thats just what I think.

FYI: I now hunt with a Rem 870 3" 12g

3"

This gun will be a do it all gun for about a year or two, at that time I plan to turn it into a dedicated turkey and deer shotgun and I will buy a second shotgun for just waterfowling. I think I would be ok with a 3" gun for this purpose.

I have a supermag for turkeys, but I find most of the shells pattern better with the 3". BUT it is always fun to slip a candle stick in there when someone thinks a light game 2.75 is in the chamber. cruel I know, but its good for a laugh.

for what its worth, why not. But it is certainly not a requirement by any means.

I have a Remmy 870 XCS supermag and honestly shoot 3" shells for the majority of the season BUT when the late season mallards have their kevlar on or the geese won't decoy and I'm pass shooting them its sure nice to have the option of a bit more punch!
