Remington 870 factory 14" barrels, Pre Order!

Can someone explain what the "detent balls" are that are being discussed?

If we swap the barrel out on an 870 does the firearm become restricted or remain NR?

Thanks.

The detent ball is something used in some Police and Wingmaster models of 870 to keep the magazine cap from "walking" off. Most new models including the Express and the tacticools do not use the detent on the barrel lug. They use a detent punched into the magazine tube to retain the magazine spring and stop it from putting pressure on the mag cap.

Swapping the barrel does not make it restricted. It is still over the overall length to be legal. If the barrel is built from the factory under 18" it is ok but you cannot modify your barrels to be under legal ie. a "sawed off" shotgun is no bueno.

You can email me at Nick@reliablegun.com if you have any other questions.

The detent balls are the original system Remington used to hold the magazine cap in place. It's a spring loaded ball in the lug that mates with grooves on the underside of the cap to keep the cap from coming loose.
The only way to make a pump shotgun restricted is to make the over all length less then 26".
As long as the barrel is factory made there is no restrictions on the barrels length. The dumb part is you can't cut a long barrel down below 18" without creating a prohibited device ( the barrel).

edit, what he said... :)

And it's easier to add a mag extension...... :)
How much for a ball detent hole drilled and staked?

The last express barrel I bought (a couple of years ago albeit) didn't have the detent, but the hole for it was in the lug already. I realize that may of change, but hopefully not. I still have a couple of detents and springs kicking around

Any signs of peening of the hole? It might have just lost the ball....

Reasonable. It's a tricky place to drill a hole but it's a bit easier with the shorter barrels...:)
Do you stock the parts?
Grandpa Reliable says "I think I got some somewhere!"

We'll check when we open up tomorrow lol

Please excuse my ignorance, just a quick question. I have an older Wingmaster with the ball and detent, will one of these barrels work with my older setup? Are there any modifications that are needed? ( I read the posts about drilling and installing a ball, is this a neccesary mod or just a desirable one?)

Thanks in advance

Maybe Reliable can do a package deal and see if there is enough interest in a detent ball package price..... :)

I may just have to whip up a drill jig at work tomorrow. I already have the detents, springs and the punch.

Thanks everyone for the HUGE response.

We have sold out of the allotted amount available for pre-sale.

Thanks you very much!

It will work but it might come loose and need some hand tightening now and again.

Or rather than doing the ball detent thing you can just slap an 1100 forend wave washer on before you put either the mag tube cap or the mag extension on and call it good after you tighten it down. Brownell's part number 838-000-021WB for about $7 and Robert is your mother's brother...
