remington 870? going forward?

I'm surprised they are going to re-open Ilion? it's over a 100 yrs old and I'm guessing should be turned into a museum?

For someone who spends an enormous amount time behind a pump gun, I consider the Benelli Nova the entry level for a term reliable pump. My primary target pumps are Browning BPS's. The 870's I've owned have never ejected well, the Mossberg never felt quality to me. The Benelli will load, fire and eject anything you feed it reliably, tears down completely in under a minute without tools, the last one I owned had 16000 shells through it when I sold it, never skipped a beat and showed little signs of wear.

Funny, my findings are quite the opposite, guiding waterfowl hunts in the prairies for a number of years, I've had nothing but terrible experiences with the Benelli Nova, theres been 6 instances i can recall off the top of my head of different customers having "Novas" and each one of them having to use my back up 870 to finish the hunts, 5 of them were due to fte, and 1 we couldn't even load, it was brand new and jammed the 1st tube shell everytime, enough of that we had geese coming in, the 870 saved the day again. With that being said every 870 I or any of my associates have had performed flawlessly, in -25 though to +30, snow, sleet, freezing rain, heavy steel, my personal use back in Ontario with my circle using slugs on deer, moose and bears, through to skeet shooting on weekends, I've never had an issue nor has any of my circle had an issue with an 870 performing.
Oh well, it's all good, I'll keep using my 870 to fill my freezer and break Clay's, no complaints here on the 870,

In the end get what fits you and you enjoy shooting, that's half of it,

Had a chance to examine both the 870 and 500, I have slender digits and the loading gate catches me occasionally. That being said if I were to purchase a pump it would have to be the 500 for that reason alone, bonus for the tang mounted safety.

A wingmaster of older generations is probably the most reliable and smooth pump ever created.. 870s, 500s etc are a huge step down but still reliable. Should you be worried about parts? Hardly, there is probably more 870s in Canada than any other shotgun.

i agree with most of what you say and i do love old wingmasters, but as for smooth i have an old high standard pump, and the action will fall open if you hold it vertical. it is the definition of smooth.
