Remington 870 issues

Good morning! I am consulting the gurus about an issue I am having with my 20g Remington 870 NWTF edition.
The issue is when I quickly cycle the shotgun after firing a round instead of loading a new shell from the mag tube it drops it right out the bottom.
I can't seem to replicate the issue when quickly cycling the shotgun full of unfired rounds. Only after firing the shotgun and then quickly cycling it. Slowly cycling will load a new shell into the chamber no problem.
I have had the shotgun apart and have not seen any issue with the shell latches, they do not appear bent or unstaked.
Mag tube spring is strong, uncut from factory length with the factory follower. Doesn't appear to hang up stick during its travel.
I am thinking that there is something up in the triggergroup, perhaps a timing related issue?

Hope to hear some direction with what I should do next in my troubleshooting process!

Pic of the shotgun for attention! I would love to get a 20g mag tube extension to complete it. Such a handy nimble gun.

Sounds like shell latches aren't holding tight enough. Especially since it happens after you fire leading me to believe the force is letting a shell slip out prematurely.

Is there anything dirt or gunk from factory maybe paint stopping them from moving? Had a similar issue with a Express and there was a burr on in the shelf catches stopping it from moving free

Can you hose the shell latches out too with high pressure in chlorinated brake cleaner?

I'm wondering is factory paint go in there and gummed it up

Also for this happen with all live ammo or just certain ammo like the win aluminum bases target loads?

Shell lathes or timing/engagement is off from a worn out forend tube action bars. The latter is more rare, but possible.

Happens if I fire on an empty chamber too and then cycle the action.

I have only tried cheap aluminum base target load so far.

I can go back into the gun and look for paint inside the action but I taped it off pretty solidly before spraying it.

I have loaded the mage tube with 4 live shells while the shotgun was disassembled. Trigger group, bolt, carrier, barrel and forend off. Then really rattled on the gun, bonked the butt off the ground in an attempt to see if a shell would pop out of the tube under pressure like that. But no luck.

I have been working on it a little bit tonight. I have induced another type of failure I did not see yesterday on the clay field. Pumping the action at moderate speed will bind up with the following shell catching on the lifter after its been released from the mag tube. I don't think I am short stroking the action, I can routinely shoot doubles with my BPS and Model 12s.

I have blasted out the shell latches with compressed air, I did not have any more brake cleaner to hose in there.

Forend nut is tight, no movement when attempting to tighten besides turning the entire forend assembly
Well it's eaither you follower or thr he'll latches.
I take it you hVe tried several types to shells to make sure ita not that.
Cheap challenger and the like can have issues on pumps and semis

I have tried some federal buck as well and am still experiencing the same issue.

Made sure the mag tube was clean and lightly oiled. I still have the original orange follower in the shotgun. The spring in the mag tube extends about 2" from the muzzle (20" barrel).

I think I have it figured out, the carrier was catching on the forend and gouging a bit of a ramp out. Picture hopefully attached! It must of been bumping the carrier up enough to catch or clear the shell as it was being let out of the magazine tube.
I have cleared out the area that was chewed up and then cleared the area with obvious wear from the carrier. I can't replicate any issues now!

Thank you all for your advice and guidance

I am glad you figured it out ,shot an 870 for more years than I care to remember only issue was when the rust built up enough to jam the pump as you cycled.
The older parkerized police 870s were built like a tank. The only failures I witnessed were operator induced from short stroking the action under stress. Uber reliable otherwise.

Guys, don't get the 870 express confused with the real Wingmaster!🙂
I have seen the flat finished Express barrels and actions rust from a bit of dew, it takes a lot more than that to get through the high gloss blued finish of a Wingmaster!

The only problem I have ever had with my 870 is a broken firing pin. S&J helped me with that. Thank you Simon.
Of all the Wingmasters and Express guns I have owned and shot ( more than 50 over the years) the only issue I ever had was one broken extractor on a Wingmaster .
I have , on the other hand had at least three M12's with broken firing pins and one ejector.
One must remember though to put things in perspective , all my model 12's are pretty much 1960 guns🙂
I just replaced the worn carrier on my model 31 as well, but it cycled a single dropped in round no issues. Cycling from the mag was another story!🤣
