I had a similar issue and it turned out to be a detent in the magazine tube. All I had to do was remove the spring,follower and file it down with a round file.
The detent should be a little nub on the inside of your magazine tube, about an inch from the end.

Onthehunt, what "detent" are we talking about? The two dimples at the end of the mag tube and that hold the spring retainer? Or one of the shell latches? Or something else .... ?
And did you have that issue on an 870 with a mag extension?
