Remington 870 mag extension?

I don't know about you, but I don't have my shotgun for looks. The longer mag tube makes for a lighter, streamlined gun, with one less seam for a spring to get bound up on in the tube. If nearly everyone throws on an extension anyways, why not save us the hassle and cash? The only downside for me is the barrel ring is now in a different spot, so swapping barrels isn't as easy anymore.

A lock washer will work but finding one that big that isn't super thick might be a problem. Most lock washers that big are designed for hundreds of ft. lbs of torque and the thickness won't leave much if any threads left. Almost all front sling plates for the 870 have a ball bearing detent or you can drill a small shallow hole in the barrel ring and set a small bearing in it with some epoxy.

It dosent have these detents you speak of, and it dosent click either when I tighten it. But it seems like it's not going to back off, I wont know till I get it out. I really had to tourqe on it to get it tight enough that the barrel wouldnt move, and I can bairly get it off by hand. Do you think a lock washer would do the trick?

Use the wave washer from the 1100 forend retainer...

I know the type of lock washer your thinking about, and yeah that would'nt be any good. I was actually thinking about this type.

I have some at work that should fit, but I forgot to grab one so I'll have to wait till Monday to see if it'll work. If not I'll probably do what you suggested, or get the washer Mudgunner reccomended.

Those are antivibration washers, they'll chew both parts up pretty good. They're best used with parts that are assembled once and left alone.

Blast! Nothing can be easy! This mod has been a lot harder than it should be. First the threads on the extension were not a perfect match to the mag tube. Then I discovered I needed a new mag spring, even though the guy at the gun shop I got the extension from told me it'll work with the stock mag spring. Then it took nearly 3 weeks to get the proper one. Now I need to either drill a hole or order another part. Uggghh! On top of that I just found out my gun is ugly! lol.
Thanks, you've been very helpful. I'm going to look for that part Mudgunner suggestedm (thanks btw). And if that dosent work I guess I'll be drilling holes.

Lol the joys of modding stuff. Its never as easy as it looked at first and when it is you get paranoid that you did something wrong. The guy at the store is half right. Usually a +1 extension works with the factory spring if you had a retainer other than the long plastic one. The spring is shorter on those, that's why you needed a new one. Are you planning on adding a sling? I ask because the sling plate is bolt-on and solves the issue plus gives you a spot to mount a 2 point. If not then look into the wave spring, it should be easy enough to find.

What, you dont approve? I'm going to go strip off the duracoat and have it re-blued now because you dont like it.:jerkit:

It's 10 times better than the crap blueing job that remington did. If it got even 1 drop of water on it, it would start to rust before your eyes.
Plus it's highly tactical. If I'm holding this thing and walk into the forest I literally dissapear. Ever seen predator?

You use that term pretty loosely....

And no. I don't like it. It looks tacky. You probably should have reblued the whole gun before half ass duracoating it. :jerkit:

What's tacky is crapping all over someone's gun that is perfectly functional with work they did themselves. Class act man.

If it worries you, use a prick punch to put divots on the back of the extension where they are on the origional mag cap.

Thanks for the reply, Bro..
You even lift?

I didn't crap all over anything. He asked a question and it got answered when he was a #### about it. Did it have anything to do with you? Not likely. Stay classy.
