I am looking at a new shotgun. So far the two that stick out in my price range are:

1. Remington 870 Express Super Mag Combo or
2. Benelli Supernova Combo

This will be my first shotgun and am just wondering if any fellow nutz have either of the two and could send some feedback or opinions!

Thanks in advance,
Tim

I bought an Remington 870 Express Super Mag back in 02 or 03. I have shot maybe around 5000 traps loads through it. I have nothing but praise for this shotgun. No problems. That being said there has been reports that the quaity on these models has taken a nose dive since then. I cant confirm or deny this.

I am thinking about picking up a Benelli Supernova also.

I'd rather buy an older used Remington in good shape than any of the new guns being put out.

If you are OK buying a used gun in great shape you can get a great deal and an action that glides like silk from on of those older Remingtons. A buddy has a 10 year old 870 that he has never cleaned and its smoother than a wet p%^$y. I took it apart to clean for him and even with pine needles and years of powder residue it ran fine. After cleaning it was probably the single nices action I have ever felt on any shotgun and I have played with lots.

If you are stuck on buying new I would probably lean towards the Benelli.

Having shot both I would recommend the Supernova. Overall in my experience it is a smoother gun and more fun to shoot. Plus the supernova has the added recoil pad if your going to be shooting heavier loads.

I just did this debate myself and ended up with the Supernova.

1. It fit me better "out of the box" so less cost for stock changes.

2. It came with shim kits for adjusting stock position, so less cost for performance tweaks.

3. It came with 3 chokes, a value of $50-$100 each vs. the 1 or none with the 870.

4. I always saw 870s for sale on the EE, but almost never a Supernova...

I've had it for less than a week now and I've put over 100 shells through it at paper and at clays and it seems great. I've shot an 870 Police a fair bit, and this seems to fit me much better. I like the shell stop button, and the bead is very visible, even against a bright blue sky or a dark green forest backdrop. Felt recoil appears less than both my friends' SxS - they were complaining about their shoulders.

Downsides to the Benelli are the limited and sometimes-costly aftermarket goodies, and the non-traditional looks (IMO).

I own a Benelli Super Nova, and a Remi 870 Wingmaster. My Benelli got me my first turkey this spring, is smooth, fires nice, and is light. The Remi, an older model, is built solid, great action, but is heavy. Ive had a hard time finding a rifled barell for the Super-Nova and they are EXPENSIVE. So my Benelli is the go to Turkey/ Grouse/ Bird/ skeet gun, but I'm getting a Remi 870 with a rifled barrell and a red dot scope for Hogs and maybe deer. They are both great guns.

I bought my 870 express combo this spring and went through 4 boxes and the display model before I found one that didn't have a dent in the stock or a scratch on the receiver or barrel, bluing missing from the barrel etc. Last box.....found one. Gun shoots Great! finish is Remington's major failing. The gun is mechanically sound but the finishing and shipping department need an overhaul in my view.
The internals showed signs of poor finishing techniques but fit good.
There were some burrs on the bolt carrier, metal slide insert in the fore-stock and inside the receiver on the guide ways. I was able to quickly and easily remove these with some fine sand paper in just a few minutes. I also sprayed some molly bullets coating spray on the mag tube to keep it black and smooth out the rough feel of the mat blued finish. These little things really helped smooth out the action. I enjoyed doing it but I shouldn't of had to do it. I'm willing to bet the Benelli doesn't have rough machineing burrs inside its action....of course you are paying more to ensure that.

browning BPS is my preferance, i have all three. i find the throw on the supernova to long and foregrip to fat, the 870 functions well but not smooth. i like the feel of the bps and the fact it toss the hulls at my feet, if you have not loomed at the bps yet do so.

BPS is a lot more $$$ than an 870.
The BPS is made in Brazil now and is the same as the Winchester pump action which is now made in Belgium.
Rem is still NY USA....which explains something...Since an American makes more money than a Brazilian or a Belgian the lower cost has to mean lower quality I suppose.

I have 2 870"s and have shot the supernova.....870 works great although it was an express so the finishing was a little rough and I was getting some stovepiping, sent it back to Remington and now it cycles great! Found the supernova to be a great shotgun although It seemed to be a lot heavier than the 870 and didnt swing as nice. That said, my father in law gave me a Rem 887 pump that he won in a Ducks Unlimited auction and I love it! Should be in the price range you are looking at and takes every thing from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2's.

I just went through this debate myself.I ended up liking the feel and simplicity of the 870 more.I found the ghost sights just didn't seem right on the Nova and didn't like the overly chunky feeling of the fore stock.I found the Benelli loads at an odd angle as well...check it out and see what you think.

Remington 870 vs. Benelli

Find a well cared for used older Rem. 870 and it will never let you down........I have no faith whatsoever in the new Remington firearms. The Benelli is great, but you do not need to spend that much money. I found a little used Winchester 101 that is 30 years old and a joy. Shop around.

My vote is for the Supernova. The quality of the 870 isn't what it used to be. The Benelli is a well built gun and worth the money. If you can get over people telling you they don't like the "looks" because it's unconventional from the 1950's style the 870 sports then you can really appreciate the quality of the Nova.

Definitely go out and play with each at the store... I'm 5'9", and I find the throw on the pump a little long on both the bps and benelli's, whereas the 870 is perfect. I really like all of them, but just find the plain-jane 870 works better for my size. Something to consider anyway.

Before I bought my Nova I was shooting trap with dads 870. It worked great with Federal ammo but when I loaded some Winchester it jammed almost instantly and would jam 3-4 times each box and in general cycled horribly hard. My Benelli makes no such discrimination and shoots every load I've put through it flawlessly.

Just something to consider I'm sure you can find stories like this for both sides

Got both i would just say an older 870 is a great gun the Benelli is not that heavy and is a great gun... I would make sure to handle a brand new 870 i would buy online a Benelli... Cheers.JP.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the feedback, I made my decision and picked up a remington lastnight... the model 887 nitro! Hope it lives up to the reputation of the 870, now just have to wait for them to come out with a cantilevered slug barrel for it!

The Winchesters are Turkish made. Where did you hear that BPS's were being built in Brazil instead of in Japan by Miroku?
