Remington 870 POLICE

I want to buy a remington 870p with 18 in barrel and wood stock, what do you think of this shotgun, and where to buy it.
thanks

Can't go wrong with an 870. See Wolverine Supplies site linked above.

I went with a Grizzly and then added a bunch of accessories (Mesa LEO stock w/ enidine, parked and teflon, Wilson GR sights, 8 shot mesa side saddle, S&J follower and big safety.) More sunk in the accessories than the base gun...but it sure is fun, and it's a modular gun, 12.5" barrel, which is hard to get elsewhere. If I knew when I started how much I was going to do, perhaps I would have started with a true Rem action and 18", but oh well. Never going to sell it.

I have had mine for over a year now and I love it. Never had a problem with it and its nice looking to boot.

Here is a picture with my new dog. I thought I saw one for sale on the EE..

Probably costs less to buy an express chop the barrel to 18" put GS sights on it and add a 1 shot adapter.

The wood looks identical between the Police and an express (If the PIC shown above is a factory police model).

Its not just about the looks, the Express has dimples in the mag tube to hold in the cap. If you put a mag extension you need to get rid of the dimples or it wont feed the extra rounds.

While the receiver might be a police, I don't think the barrel is. That is an 18" barrel - factory police are 18.5". I've had a few, so I know the difference!

I have a 14" Police Magnum, and it's my 'never sell' shotgun at this point.

My 870 is an express magnum I bought at Lebaron 6 years ago. It came from the factory with 18 1/2 inch bbl, and mag extension. I paid 350 dollars brand new.

The dog or the gun? Actually I like the dog better, furry white little guy. I have an 870 Express Tactical from when they were OD green and came with the knoxx recoil reducing stock and mag extension already.

yea but when you add the heavier magazine spring, heavier carrier dog spring, metal trigger housing, machined extractor, then do some tune up work on the action your over the cost of a new 870 police

:D

All earlier production Police Magnums (and other models) have 18" barrels. When REM started producing the economy Express models several years ago with the blued bead blasted finish and the painted Police models, they changed the barrel lengths to 18.5" for some reason. Probably to be flush with their 2 round extension.

yeah my 870P came with an 18" barrel - but its painted (some sortof black oxide) not parked. so there must have been some overlap.
kindof annoying because its not flush with the S&J and factory Remmy +2 extensions with the bayonet 'button' on the end.
theyre flush with the Choate +2 extension though, but the Choate extension is kindof a POS unless you spend some time honing the inside of it.

take some time really considering whether or not you need an 870P. look at my thread comparing the different finishes - thats basically what you are paying 2x the money for: smoother finish inside-out. if youre on a budget and only care about function, and are planing on covering the thing with a full length rail, sidesaddle, etc anyway then just get the 870 Express and save yourself a lot of money.
the zombies arent going to care whether you have 870 POLICE MAGNUM or 870 EXPRESS MAGNUM written down the side of your gun.

Great gun, that's the ones we use at work. Places to buy in Canada:

Cabelas Canada
Russells Sports
LeBaron Sports
Wholesales Outfitters
Ellwood Epps
The Gun Dealer

But don't forget this website sponsors on top of this web page.

To name a few.

Besides the above-mentioned differences, the Police models have a much more durable and corrosion resistant Parkerized finish compared to the black oxide on the Express and are subjected to a somewhat more rigourous standard of quality control. The wood stocks on any recent porduction 870 Police guns I have seen are walnut instead of birch, as with the Express.

If you want to run an extended magazine, the Police models still use the ball detent on the barrel lug to retain the encap/magazine extension. Express magazine tubes also have dimples, which need to be removed to allow an extension to function properly. This does not apply to those Expresses that come with the magazine extension.
