I bought a new 870 express a couple years ago new, and since I started shooting, quite often the slide will stay 'stuck' in the locked position for a few seconds after the shot has fired. Either slamming the butt on the ground or waiting for 3-6 seconds will free it enough to pump to the rear. An army gunsmith filed a little burr out of the frame where the extractor passes through, but that's the only thing we could find. Has anyone encountered this or know how to fix this? I love the 870 and have used them in my past 2 jobs, but I hate not being able to depend on a second shot. Thanks.

I had that issue when firing a specific brand of ammo, and no other time than that... I've stricken the name of the ammo from my mind except that it started with "F" and sounded Italian. Have you switched ammo?

I've tried a few different kinds of ammo, and different lengths (2-3/4 and 3"). It might stick on the first round or the eighth (tube extension), doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to it.

I have seen it happen with some ammo and not others...

Usually if the rear of the chamber is polished it helps.

Take a 12g brush for cleaning the bore like you can get at any hunting store. Wrap some steel wool around it. Put some light oil on it (like gun oil). Put it in the chuck of a hand drill and put it in the chamber of the gun. Run it for 10-15 minutes. I stopped to let it cool a few times, don't let it get too hot.

This will remove any burrs or roughness that was left from the manufacturing process. Also might want to make sure the area just outside the chamber where the rim of the shotshell rests is not rough. I polished it with some steel wool by hand.

This fixed the problem for me. Many other people have had this problem. Just try seaching "rem 870."

Also, the cheap winchester shells at walmart are famous for sticking like this. I think they have a steel base. Brass shells will be much better.

Your action bar lock may be sticking as well...when it is stuck check to see it the action bar release lever is up, if it is down that will be why you can't cycle the action.
