I am looking at buying a Remington 870 Super Magnum in the very near future and was wondering what people thought of them? I remember hearing when they first came out that you couldn't cycle 2 3/4 shells in them properly... I am wondering if anyone can either confirm or deny this? Any info or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

super mag

i have a pump super mag and love it no problems cycling .just got a super mag autoloader and i hope it works as well .

Mine cycles everything I have put through it. The only problem I've had is with some of the el-cheapo target loads, hulls expand a it in the chamber and you have to rack the slide HARD to spit them out. This happens only rarely and otherwise it's a great gun.

I had one, straight out of the box, wouldn't cycle the heavier loads... a few weeks at the repair center, and worked fine, no charge. ( I think it was a chamber polishing issue as well)

Any reason why you want an 870 Supermag? what is the intended purpose. I have owned 870s, BPSs, Browning Golds, Rem 1100, Rem 1187 etc and by far my favourite and least expensive gun is my Baikal MP-153 Semi Auto 3.5" it will cycle almost anything except certain cheap shells that expand in the chamber.

I bought the Remington 870 Super Magnum (my first shotty) I've put about 500 rounds through it popping clay pigeons and I purchased it in March, I haven't had a single issue with it. My only beef would be after a long day of shooting skeet, you might need an ice pack, doesn't absorb recoil very well.

My buddies Benelli Super Nova on the other hand, shoots great, very little recoil, but just doesn't feel right in my fat fingers :D

870 SuperMag is super.

I got the 870 supermag in June, love the thing. Same problem with cheap skeet loads, have to rack it hard to pop them out, but otherwise great. Also ordered a 20" sabot slug barrel with rifle sights, plenty of fun those slugs, but they kick like a mule, especially the 3" ones! Nice to know I can shoot skeet/trap (not as well as an over/under but, lots of fun) and upland/small game with 2.75", then load up with 3.5" shells for waterfowl or turkey, and switch barrels to go deer hunting with slugs. Not many other guns give you that kind of "bang" for the buck. Got an 18" tube on the way for zombie work, should make a pretty good bang. Then I might get crazy with some of the endless "tactical" stuff there is for the 870, but we'll see how the visa card looks by then.

The plan is to use this gun for geese, ducks, grouse, and anything else that looks tasty. I don't really want an auto loader as I am a pretty big fan of pump action shotguns and an even bigger fan of Remy. And you certainly can't beat the price.
Thanks for all the info guys, you've really been a big help. Looks like I'll be getting one as soon as I return.

Thanks again, Lance

For those of you finding cheap shells not cycling well, if you are using cheap Winchesters from Walmart try switching to the cheap Federal from CTire. Worked for me.

I do have an 870 style gun as well as my Auto loader but never use it.

I find with a pump, every time you rack it, you are ever so slightly coming off target, for me, I shoot WAY better with an autoloader than I ever did with a pump. I shot pump for over 10-15 years before going SA. I'll never go back.

Mine will eat and spit anything I've put through it so far. I actually like the pump action for target re-acquisition. I find that I'm forced to go through the same find-follow-lead-followthrough sequence as I had to do for the initial shot and I'm on more consistently than I am with an autoloader. Just my experience.
