Remington 870 Tac-14 Legal Length

My interpretation is based on general knowledge but is backed up by numerous documents. This document, posted on the Department of Justice website supports my viewpoint: https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/rp-pr/csj-sjc/legis-redact/legistics/p1p5.html

The first paragraph of the content sums it up:

Blastattack, it seems you know what you are doing. So I wish you good luck with that build.

Personally, and for myself ... I would need something a bit more substantial than "Principles governing the use of definitions" and in order to risk prison time and a criminal record .... but that is just me ....

And who knows ... maybe a judge would buy into your good faith ... and would give you an Unconditional Discharge ... and based on your argument ... you never know .... :)

That's fair. Ultimately this whole conundrum is solved with a ~16" barrel, then there is no question about legality (unless we dive into the whole "sawing, cutting, or any other alteration" rabbit hole). But a 16" costs additional money, though someone may trade a 16" for a 14".

I'm not even sure if or when this thing will see the light of day. I just want to make something kinda cool, and make a largely useless toy into something more entertaining.

I have a feeling that if "the powers that be" decided to take issue with someone, the "I did everything to stay within the letter of the law" shotgun would be a footnote in the proceedings. Our justice system is very much "shotgun justice", where they shoot you with as many charges as they can and hope you plead out (bleed out actually; financially, emotionally, etc) to something so they don't have to do any work and can say they're doing something about firearms violence on our streets.

Blastattack, ... Remington 16 inch 12ga 870 barrels .... do not exist!!!

(Or at least not to my knowledge. I have never seen one or seen one listed.)

So, you are looking at a custom barrel ... that would need to meet the legal requirement of "manufactured at the factory" ...

And this is where my knowledge ends .... I have no clue how that would work ....
Would that barrel come with a certificate that states "manufactured at the factory" ?
And who could issue such a certificate?
Who could make such a barrel?

Dlask. They just had a run of 16.25" barrels, sold out fast!

I'd sure hate to see the freak out if someone asked about putting a telescoping stock on an 8 1/2 incher. Sheesh. Overall length is the total length of the gun and any accessories that are affixed to the gun, unless those accessories are not gun parts, ie: bayonets, cup holders, fleshlights, etc.

Mister Donut posted one which is pretty sweet looking:

I’ll post mine up when she’s done. Should look pretty slick. I’ll probably get a soft grip like that and trim the beavertail off.

In distinctly opposite news, I scored a 28" express barrel and three chokes for $160 today. Now when this gun isn't being a meme it can actually be somewhat useful, perhaps.

OP,
You need to take a location measurement of your 870 bbl lugs.

The Tac 14 Bbl lug is located so it will not fit a std mag tube receiver.
The reverse is apparent on the Tactical 870 w/ extended factory mag tube as those Bbls will not fit a std 870.

You’re thinking of the Mossberg, the 14” 870 barrels are the same as their standard length barrels with regards to barrel lug placement. Your correct about the barrel luv and factory extended mag tube on some of the 870 Tactical’s.

You are correct
I stand corrected

870 Tac 14 & std 870 Bbl lug measurement
aft face of Bbl lug to receiver face is 11 1/16" inches

I don't have my 870Tac on location to take said measurement.

Never owned a Mossberg.

So, happy fun time; that little graphic from Nordic is wrong. The +1 extension does not stick out 1.500", but rather, only sticks out 3/4" beyond the muzzle. I am currently 1/4" short.

Rem offered a parkerized 12Ga plus 1 mag tube extension w/ QD/push button sling attachment(3/8" diam hole) machined into the end for LE/Mil.

I've got the extension already installed, but I think the sling attachment idea, whether it's a QD cup or a stud of some sort, is the solution. Does anyone know where I may be able to get some sort of sling studdy/qd cup thing that I could attach? A QD cup with threads in the bottom would be perfect, as would a sling stud that uses 1/4" threads. The hole in the front of the extension is 0.275", so something with 1/4" threads would be perfect. The standard "machine screw" studs are all #10-32, which is far too small.

I came across this from Uncle Mikes, and visually it looks like those threads may be 1/4". It's their stud kit for Remington 742 ADL. If they are 1/4", it can be modified to work quite easily. Can anyone confirm if these are 1/4-20 or 1/4-28?

I'm open to suggestions. I could just stick a bolt through the hole and call it good, but it's kinda pointless because that doesn't add any sort of functionality. A sling plate and a button head screw could push me over the length, as could some other random addition, like a spike or something. Sooooo close, yes so far. She look awesome though. I'll post pics when she's legal.

This thing on Amazon is perfect but is not available. Standard 1/4-20 camera threads, and 1" of thread I can easily trim to length if needed.

Uncle Mike's 742 stud is threaded 1/4-28tpi.

MagPul flush cups are threaded 1/4-20tpi.

A GrovTec.com non rotating flush cup w/ #10-32 countersunk allen head screw would suffice.

.275" clearance hole could easily be bushed for use w/ a #10-32 screw to attach a QD/flush cup.

If I wasn't a computer idiot,I'd post pics of flush cups on my 870's & Tac 14's.

I’d love to see your solutions. Can I PM you my email, and post the pics here for you?

I used a magpul QD cup, that particular 870 mag tube nut didn’t come with a stud swivel and I have QD mounts on the buttstock already. Sticks out more than a 1/4” I’m guessing but I can measure if you like.

No need to measure. Does that thing actually use 1/4” threads?

Never measured thread pitch but DANS40X said it’s 1/4-20, It fit through the hole in the mag tube nut fine and from what I remember the retaining nut on the inside was fairly low profile. I might have relieved a bit of material on the spring retainer so the teeth engage the mag tub nut.

Looks like a good idea, but the only thing I would be concerned with is if it's permanently affixed or not. If you could easily unscrew everything and the gun is still able to function normally, might be legally a bit iffy.
