I would appreciate anyones opinion. I have a Remington 870 Special Purpose Magnum, 12 Ga., which can use 2 3/4" or 3" shells. I have 3 screw in Remington chokes, full, mod and improved.

I am planning on getting into turkey shooting and would like to know, should I buy Remington or after market, extra full/turkey chokes? If after market, what brand/name?

Thanks

There are a lot of options out there for aftermarket chokes. Usually you get what you pay for however that is always not the case. Personally when I had my remington I had good luck with both Undertaker and Jellyhead chokes..each threw a great pattern with different shells I wanted to use that year

You can't beat the H.S. undertaker chokes I bought mine for my winchester SX3 for about $35 and it makes a world of difference in pattern with #5 winchester 3 or 3 1/2".

It was so much of a difference that I would not recommend anything other than an x or xx full choke for turkey hunting.

I have heard of people having to take 3 or 4 shots at a bird with mod or full chokes. Cheap insurance if you pattern it and know where your gun shoots too.

Most people shoot turkeys way before they should, the same rule stands for them as waterfowl, never shoot at a turkey that is getting closer. I used a factory full that was throwing relatively loose patterns along the lines of Improved modified, at 12 yards I could have used straight cylinder and there would have not been much difference.

To the op pattern the chokes you have, factory labels mean nothing, call your turkey close and choke selection will be less important.

I have had two opportunities over the two years, and one shot each bird with a Rem extra full. Two clean fast kills @ 20 yrds. The last bird turned on me, facing me as i pulled the trigger, and i pulled 6 pieces of copper plated #5 from the breast.

Indian creek black diamond strike .665

Puregold .670

Primos jellyhead .665

Shooting Hevishot turkey in #6 or winchester extended range turkey #6 any one of these chokes will get the job done right.
The heavy shot varieties of shot are expensive but a box or 2 will last you a long time.
Hunting turkeys is never high volume shooting and the heavyshot will pattern and hold pattern at longer ranges much much better than any lead shell.
If your going to spend money on a good after market choke you sholud also spend a little extra on your ammo so you get the most out of your choke you wont be disapointed you did.

indian creek 75.00 bass pro in ontario has these in stock

pure gold 75.00 order online from puregold direct

jellyhead 45.00 also available at basspro and many other shops in ontario.

I've been using an extra full Turkey Rem Choke for shooting pest birds around the farm....(.687 constriction). I've patterned it at <50 yards and it still remains in a nice tight pattern using 2-3/4 Winchester AA heavy target loads....7-1/2 shot. I've also used that choke with Remington Shur-Shot Heavy Dove 2-3/4 #8 shot....basically the same result as with the AA's. All in all the choke has worked as advertised. Remington claims that 80% of the pellets will remain in a 30" circle at 40 yards and I'd say that in my experience with using that choke their claim is very close or even bang on. I can't comment on the durability of the rem choke but it seems to be of decent quality. I would imagine that some of the aftermarket offerings would probably be of better quality though......
