Remington 870 vs 887??

Hello All,

I am just getting into the shooting sport and am currently interested in skeet/trap shooting. With a limited budget, I come to the conclusion that either Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 will be a good choice to get into skeet/trap shooting. However, when I visited a local gun shop the other day, they have neither in stock and recommended me a Remington 887. Price is pretty much the same as the 870 and the ArmorLokt coating seems very useful in preventing reust. I also like the look which is a bit more modern.

Unfortunately, after some research on the internet, there seems to be very few review of the 887. So if any of you guys has a 887, maybe you can shed me some light. I mainly want to know whats the main difference between 870 and 887 besides the ArmorLokt coating. Also are there any disadvantages I may need to be aware if I decide to get 887 instead of 870?

im open minded to new ideas but i think messing with a tried and tested shotgun is a mistake. i have owned quite a few 870's and they have never let me down. i played with a 887 it felt cheap and flimzy, aswell a buddy of mine was shooting when it was minus 20 or so and the some of the plastic snapped i would get a 870 and have a shotgun that will never let you down
 
I have never handled or shot an 887, but i everything i have heard from people who do have one is to stick with the 870 or 500 and be happy you made the right choice.
You may want to try and find either one as a combo with 2 or 3 barrels, it saves you getting another gun down the road (even though a new one is never a bad thing).
Try searching/calling some of the sponsors up top, they will have one of the two shotguns in for sure (i always deal with Gary at Wanstalls, great service and only $10 shipping fee)
 
I have an 887 and have not had any issues, however a lot of people did. I personally would spend the extra for a bps or a winchester sxp.
 
I've owned 870s for many years. A couple years ago I won an 887 in a raffle. It didn't take long to conclude the 887 was a piece of crap and I got rid of it. I still have an 870 plus a couple of spare barrels for it.

I love remington pumps but have to agree with you. The 887 is not a keeper for me either.
 
I am in the same situation as Gardian. Limited budget and undecided between the 870 & 887. I really like the rugged look of the 887. I have been trying to find enough good reviews on the 887 to be comfortable hitting the 'order' button but so far I'm still unsure. I know that should solve my situation for me since I'm still unsure after lots of research but I REALLY like the look of it lol. The benelli nova is nice too but more $$. I have read a few forums and they say the 2nd generation 887 has upgraded the firing mechanism and it is supposed to eliminate the double feeds and jamming issues. Anyone else know anything about this? Thanks
 
Its not likly worth the risk on the 887. I have a good one it's worked almost flawlessly in the 3000 or so rounds itshot, but there are a lot of bad reviews. Alot of problems I think are from big shot 3-3 1/2" rounds flexing the gun, there isn't much steel besides the bolt assembly. The sxp is a nice shotgun around the same price. K like it more than my brothers new 870 super mag.
 
Thanks for all the input. Looks like I better stick with either 870 or Mossberg 500. No wonder I couldn't find too many review for the 887. It may just because it is such a crap that people didn't bother doing any review on it.

A new benelli nova in black should be 479-499. That's fairly comparable to the 870's save for the express versions.

The benelli will last forever without any trouble.

Find a used 870 wingmaster! When Remington's were good!
 
Same here. I have mostly decided against the 887 now due to the fact that benelli and remington are easier to get chockes and accesseries for. I would like a shotgun that i can change barrels on for either trap shooting or coyote hunting or whatever. Basically get 1 gun that can do it all. So far the nova seems promising for my price range.
 
I'd suggest looking around for a good used 1100, Beretta, or SX-1 (which can be found within spitting distance of the price range your are talking about). If you must buy a pump, I'd consider a used 870 wingmaster, an older model 12, or a nice BPS trap. For the BPS I recommended the trap model because it has a magazine cut-off which will save you from being Sir Shucks-a-lot on the line (if you don't know how to manipulate the shell lifter on the non-trap models). Winchester's sxp seems pretty good too, but the greatest pump trap gun (some would say the greatest trap gun period) of all time has got to be the model 12.

I predict that if you insist on buying the pump within a year you'll be wishing you saved up another couple weeks and bought a good used break or semi off the bat. Some folks shoot the pumps forever and love them, but they are in the minority.
 
All local shops don't have 870 or Mossberg 500 in stock. They do, however, have the Benelli Supernova in stock. Is it worth the extra money? Also if I find I dont like skeet/trap shooting, will I loose a lot if I try to sell it compare to buying 870 or Mossberg and sell those later??
