Remington 870 vs. Other Pumps

What would be a fair price for a replacement barrel on an 870?

I've seen them as low as $150 and as insane as $400.

It depends entirely on the type of barrel. Whether its threaded for chokes, has a rib, polished or matte finish... The lower end will get you a 30" barrel with 2 3/4" chamber, fixed full choke and no vent rib.

I see the Remington 870 being constantly suggested as the recommended pump shotgun, both here on this forum as well as on "best shotgun" articles. However, I've also read that there were periods where the 870 had manufacturing/quality issues.

I've been looking, and anything other than the 18.5"models seem harder to find in-stock. Beyond the 870 having sold 11M units, what makes it so great?

Also, if I'm looking at something like a Mossberg 500 or Winchester SXP, is the 870 really that much better to be worth $200-300 more, and how do you know if your getting a "good" model?

My guns came in on Friday. The 870 Fieldmaster is a beauty.

I’ve had enough 870s I could only guess. A dozen? Maybe more. They’re good guns.

But make mine a high condition Winchester Model 12 or 42 if we’re stuck on a pump, that was Hemingway’s favourite too.

I agree, nothing wrong with 870's it's just preference.
