I will start off by saying that they are both very durable and reliable shotguns. Almost to close to compare. But they both have their ups and down.

Winchester Pros: Light weight and easy to swing, very smooth action and superb cycling abilities, a bit of a hard thing to adress but if you have the defender model you do not have to mess around with magazine extensions everytime you wanna clean your barrel, the safety is located in front of the trigger, easy to clean and maintain, easy to operate, can handle almost any type of round, crisp trigger.

Winchester Cons: aluminum receiver, plastic trigger guard, hard to interchange barrels due to winchester having different versions with different lengths of magazine tubes.

Remington Pros: Steel receiver, easy to interchange barrels, metal trigger guard, smooth action, easy to clean and maintain, easy to operate, can handle almost any type of round, crisp trigger.

Remington Cons: Safety located behind the trigger, quite heavy for a shotgun, if you would like higher capacity of rounds you have to mess around with extentions, durable finish.

like i said they are both excellent shotguns, the 870 would probubly outlast the 1300 because of steel vs aluminum. But by saying outlasting im talking about tens of thousands of rounds. Personally i would prefer ther Winchester but thats just my opinion.

Whats yours?

i assume you're comparing the 870 express to the win 1300. the 870 wing master is a step above both of them.with the strength of aluminum alloys today, i wouldn't say that the 870 would outlast a 1300, but you're right , you'd be talking a lot of use before any real wear would show on either from firing.

870 IMO. They have definitely stood the test of time and keep going. If they are good enough for law enforcement use, where they get abused, neglected and beaten some more its a good enough gun for me! I used one for a while for waterfowling and couldn't ask for a more reliable gun.

I too went with the Rem 870 express with a 18" barrel, just last week as a matter of fact! I went to a local shop to look at what they had and handled it and was very impressed with it and bought it on the spot. There seems to be quite a bit more history with the 870 over any of the others.

I believe that the 870's massive aftermarket and proven durability put it ahead of any other currently manufacturered pump, though I like the action of the 1300 and would take one over most non 870 pumpguns.

My first scattergun was a Winchester 1300 Defender (full wood stock). I've lond since sold it off - and have gone through ownership and use of numerous/various incarnations of the Remington 870. As much of a die hard fan of the 870 that I am nowadays, to be honest, the Winchester (IMHO) had a much smoother action - and had the benefit of decreased weight. From what I recall of shooting the Winchester, it didn't have any more or less recoil than the all steel 870 due to its aluminum receiver. The only downside (if you can call it that) was that it came with a plastic triggerguard - but then again, most of the lower cost Remington offerings these days do as well. As far as long term wear and tear on the aluminum receiver vs. the steel of the Remmy - AR's are made of aluminum and nobody seems to make a big deal out of it... Just my $.02

Cheers,
hsld.

I strongly prefer the 1300. I've had a couple of 870's , long gone, and I have a full wood defender I bought twenty years ago that I'll never part with. Unquestionably the slickest pump I've used and it's never failed in any way in two decades. The 870's that I got rid of I basically sold because in side by side use with the 1300, they felt so rough and hard to cycle that I was pretty ticked to have bought them honestly. Oh, one was a Wingmaster and one an Express.

I've never owned the 1300, but had a 1200 along with a barrage of 870's (including one of the single shot 870 competition traps!). I'd side with the 870 HANDS DOWN, if it weren't for the shoddy manufacturing I've been hearing of in recent years. That being said, a 20 year old Express (or Sportsman, back then, IIRC) or wingmaster, IMHO, outshines the winchester hands down. From my experience, it eats a better variety of ammo and will jam less frequently when caked with crud / neglected in the bush.

In a purely mechanical sense, the Remington is a simpler design with less movement to go wrong.

This shooddy manufacture issue has me puzzled. I LOVE the 870. I had a winchester no complaints but I simply had/have more confidence in the Remington. I think the manufacture issue is cosmetic and given the price I'll trade strength/reliabilty over pretty any day.

A lot of newer 870s are rough functionally as well as cosmetically, my 2003 vintage "top of the line" 870P came nasty gritty throughout as did my friend's consecutive serial example, from what I've seen this is fairly typical. With use, polishing and little tweaks like trueing the actions bars this thing is godlike now but it should have run better out of the box.

Even with that being said I still prefer the 870 to anything else currently available.

I sold my 1300 fully equipped ONLY to have a 14" barrel shotgun...it is a Norinco. The handling of the 14" barrelled shotgun is totally different of my 18.5" barrelled 1300. It is amazing how 4.5" make a difference in handling a shotgun in a house or in field when it is used for defense against BIG critter or zombies!! BUT, the 1300 I had, had a more slick action, NEVER jam and had near the same weight fully equipped (flashlight, sidesadlle, ghost ring sight, mag extension) than my old plain Norc 14" Rem copy!! Go figure:runaway: Did I say it NEVER jam??
My old rem wingmaster jam too often for my taste (and I speak about a 1980 era Wingmaster) this is why I trade it for my 1300:eek:
