I'm in the middle of trying to pick out a new shotgun for waterfowl hunting and was wondering if the extra money for the Wingmaster is worth it. What is the difference like, smother action and better looks? I had a Remington 887 before for waterfowl. It worked great for that purpose but it was so ugly, I was embarrassed to display it in my display cabinet next to my other hunting guns. Any other shotgun suggestions is whalecum.

Wingmaster always.

Browning BPS, Mossberg 500, Ithaca 37, Benelli Supernova are other pumps that have proven themselves. Win 1200/1300/120 series will follow those listed ahead of them.

Wingmaster, better reliability and better finish. All the internals are polished and deburred and the finish is more corrosion resistant.
That being said I have rarely seen any of the major issues a lot of guys have reported with the expresses. I admit the finish does need a wipe down with an oiled rag any time you use it in damp conditions but I do that for every gun I own. The express isn't a bad gun I'd put it right next to the Mossberg 500 and 535 in my experiences, but if you want a pretty and utterly reliable pump gun the 870 wingmaster or BPS hunter or if you have the disposable income a new production Ithaca 37 are the way to go.

Was thinking about going the Semi Auto route and was looking at the Browning Silver Hunter. $1000 for a very nice looking semi auto. Anyone got experience with the Silver Hunter?

I'm a sucker for firearm that's metal and wood. Engravings just gets me more fired up over it. Synthetic stuff is saved for the safe where no one can see it.

MMM I have been a Remington guy since about 1973. Buy the express for the marsh. When new completely soak it with a good gun treatment like G96. Let it soak in. That will stop the rust issues. Take a 12 ga bore brush wrap it with 000 steel wool and flitz or other metal polish and chuck a section of cleaning rod in your drill. Polish the chamber and forcing cone area for about 20 minutes or so. Then take the gun out and put about 100 rounds through it. You will then have the legendary smoothness and reliability of the Wingmaster in a gun that can take some knocks without them showing so much. And less than half the price. Spend the difference on some Kent Fast Steel. Remington guru 3 macs will be along and confirm my prognosis.

I have owned several Wingmasters and two Express 870's... You cannot compare the two... The difference in quality is night and day... So to answer the OP's question... YES, the Wingmaster is worth the extra money... As crappy as the 887's are the 870 Expresses aren't much better. Go with either the Wingmaster or a Brownning BPS. JMO
