Remington 870 Wingmaster

To the guy who said the BPS and Wingmaster were the best guns currently made, I like both, but new production Ithaca model 37's need to be on that list as well. They have one piece barrels, great walnut, chokes, 3" capability, etc and are made of machined steel, even the trigger guards. The old ones were very good - the new ones are even better. Easily equal to a Wingmaster and, in my opinion, nicer than the BPS with a much simpler and more reliable internal design.

John Moses browning invented the 37 and it's arguably the best and last pump shotgun design he ever produced. That is saying something.

I am a lifelong Wingmaster fan... I started waterfowling with a Wingmaster 40 years ago, and except for a brief stint (brain fart), I have always owned one or two or three...

As far as the 870 Express goes... I have had four, and I can't possibly dislike a shotgun more (except maybe a Mossberg)... they were all crap... they are all gone.

My preference is the Fleur-de-lis era guns, with vented barrels... Rem chokes perhaps, or just a fixed modified choke for waterfowling... which is all that I use them for.

This sorta thing here;

... if a new gun was desired I'd look at a Browning or maybe one of the Italian guns. You don't have to wait for them to "slick up" or worry about poor fitting parts or QC issues.

You don't have to wait for a Wingmaster to "slick up" nor do you have to worry about "QC issues."

I just realized that this is a "Necro-thread" revived by a noob... the OP is long gone and the discussion long over... oops.

Still a good discussion. I have a wingmaster bought new last year and it is perfect in every way compared to my express model. Sold some nice over unders because the 870 just feels like an extension of my arm.

I'm looking at a used wingmaster with an express barrel has anyone see this done before?

Yes. Pretty common mod. Check how the barrel is retained. If there is no click detention stalled, the mag cap will be prone to shooting loose. Some guys use wave washers but it's a bit half-@ssed.

??? call it what you like but those wave washers and O-rings work.Not everyone wants to pay to get the mod done or can do it themselves
Cheers

I'm not denying they work, but it's not exactly an elegant solution. Every time you take down the gun, you risk loosing a loose o-ring or washer. But to each his own :)

I would, if in the market, value a detent version a bit more than a regular express bbl slapped onto an old wingmaster. YMMV. Not sure what guys are charging for a detent install, but i'd guess about $50.

An express barrel on a wingmaster is far from elegant but it works and O-rings are cheap so I say problem solved
