Hey guys. I would like to buy a Remington 870p in 2011 (I am just confortable with it - use one at work and want to use what I work with). Having said that, I would like to use it for hunting from time to time (will have to plug it of course). I was wondering if anyone could advise if the 870p will take barrels from other model 870's?

Thanks in advance for your help!

One thing to remember is that if you put on an Express barrel those don't have the ball detent and the police mag cap will tend to come loose, just keep an eye on it. Other than that the standard 870 barrels all fit the police model.

... or use the proper magazine spring retainer and magazine cap.

Does the police have chokes,if it is open it would be mostly useless for hunting in my opinion.Buy a 870 with interchangeable chokes. What differences would there be in the two firearms, I am not familiar with the police other than pictures?

The standard Police barrel is 18" and has IC choke and is accurate with foster slugs and rifle sights out to 100m from my experience. For new style slugs a rifled barrel is better, and although it does work for ducks and geese a different barrel with chokes would be advised. If you really wanted you could have it threaded for Remchokes and it would work well.

kingdarb, you probably already know that the 870s are all basically the same in operation and dimension. The Police models are built with some more robust parts and supposedly better QC. One 870 with two or three at most barrels (18" rifle sight, 24-26" choked, and maybe a rifled barrel) will cover off anything you want to/can hunt with a shotgun.
Cheers

Hey Ike thanks for the info. I was thinking about the 870p for the reasons that you mentioned; it is supposedly built with some more robust parts and it is put through better QC. From what I am reading it looks like a wingmaster barrel will likely fit and do the trick. I was thinking of getting the p with ghost ring or rifle sights and another longer choked barrel for turkey and such. For deer and moose I have a rifle in any case.

Do you guys know of a good place to pick up parts (ie winchester shotgun barrels)?

Thanks again - everyone on this site is always so helpful!

If you're planning on switching barrels, DON'T get ghost ring sights - unless you plan on taking them off every time you want to put your bird barrel on.... you won't be able to use it without taking off the rear ghost ring aperture at the very least, and probably the base too.

On a shotgun, I really think ghost ring sights are highly over-rated...... on that platform you realistically can't do any better than with a decent set of rifle sights, and then you maintain the option of swapping different barrels. I have multiple examples of both ghost ring sighted shotguns and rifle sighted shotguns, and if I had it all to do over again, I wouldn't bother with the ghost rings - they limit your options too much.

Now you tell me. :)

That has been my approach too :)

Well I went ahead and ordered the 870p. Didn't ask for too many bells and whistles with it. Just a standard bead side for now. Will have a mag extension tube and a sling. Just waiting for it to come in the mail now!

That is what I did as well; I just kept getting new ideas as to what was possible and it grew from there. I am sure that you will enjoy your new toy.
