I have a Remington 887 nitro mag in duck camo. I've never had any problem with it. I've taken many geese, ducks and turkeys with it. Are they really as bad as everyone says they are? I know there was an issue with some recalled models that were slam firing and such. I checked my serial number on the Remington website and mine was not one of the affected models.

As an entry-level pump action, it seems like a pretty good gun overall. It can chamber up to 3 1/2", the recoil isn't terrible, and the polymer coating, although it makes the gun feel a bit plastic and cheap, is good at protecting the barrel from weather.

So my question is: why are they considered so bad?

I bought one brand new several years ago for $325 and sold it to my brother a little later on. Works great but I scored a Benelli dirt cheap not long after. I think a lot of people just want the 870 for the heritage or aftermarket support so the although the 887 functions as required it was a sales flop

They got a bad review from a gun writer. I had one. Killed ducks dead. Sold it to fund a Beretta Semi auto. I broke the front sight off climbing through a fence. Gravel agencey sent me one out quick no charge.

You also may want to post this in the shotgun section.

A big factor in the demise of the 887 was a recall on a pile of them due to poorly fit firing pins. They could get stuck in the fired position with the pin protruding from the bolt face. This caused slam fires on some guns when they were pumped briskly to chamber a round. Remington's QC sucked in those days & they couldn't afford another bigass lawsuit I reckon.
