Remington actions

What you do is buy the cheapest 700 rifle you can find and then take the parts you do not want off, and begin your project.

Actions only are not available from Remington.

Dennis: Not so! Remington DOES sell bare actions through Brownells, but only in short action, right handed. Also, they cost as much as an entry level complete 700 and they don;t ship to Canada unless through proper exportation routes (read expensive and bothersome and time consuming).

As Guntech says, best to just buy a neglected or beat up 700 and junk it for the action. That's what I do. Plus the older, 1970's and earlier 700 actions seem to have better QA/QC and fitting, smoother triggers, etc... or maybe the bad ones haven't survived to now? ;)

Buy a used 700 with unknown history for the usual asking price of around $500

or

Buy new SPS or ADL for less, sell the unwanted new barrel and stock to recover some cash.

some of the new rem 700's are incredibly crooked when put on v blocks on a surface plate, and checked with a dial indicator. I just checked one that was .024 out, front to back.

What exactly are you checking for ? How crooked the outside is has not been that important for me......

I usually thread a barrel stub in the lathe and then screw the action on it with a tight fitting mandrel in the bolt race and see how much runout there on the mandrel........ that gives me a idea on how "square" that action is and if I need to do work on it....

I was measuring the straighness of the od of the reicever, its shaped like a bannana. I have 3 different dia mandrels for reciever facing, sleeves for lug seat and thread truing etc. The smallest of the mandrels will barely go in half way before it binds up, the boltway is that crooked.

All of this mounts in one of those HS precision military stocks with the aluminum v block, which isn't much use when the reciever is that out of square.

Brownells had a batch of 700 actions. I believe they are all sold. I think that Remington was introducing a slightly newer variant, and these were a closeout of existing stock.
Remington 700 receivers can warp when heat treated. One of the features of the 40X is that the receiver should be straighter. This is why it can be an advantage to use synthetic bedding when installing a 700 in a stock with a machined aluminum bedding block.

no point in buying ADL's, there may be some around but they are usually the same price as the SPS...the SPS has a floorplate and NO J-lock....best way to get actions is to buy SPS's and part them out....

Thanks for the input guys. I was planning on buying a bargain 700, but thought maybe the action alone was available from some dealers.
I was going to use a Parker Hale mauser action, but after seeing how many gunsmiths prefer the Rem 700 actions, I changed my mind. If these guys know them inside out, and they're the most popular, then....

rem 700 actions are popular for a few reasons, fast lock time, they are the 350 chevy of actions, every one makes parts and accsesories for them, they used to have very good triggers, and are very easy to remachine-blueprint due to being made from tubing and having a seperate, non -integral recoil lug.

Rem 700 actions sell for as much or more as sps around here.
