Am looking to get a new rifle in .223 in order to cheapen the range days. I'm leaning towards a Remington 700 SPS Tactical but am torn between the 16.5" Overmolded Ghillie Green and the 20" Overmould. Eventually I'd likely put it in some Magpul furniture and add the detachable magazine mod, but for a while it'd just be used stock. I don't compete or hunt, I just like to shoot at the range to have some fun. Is there any realworld difference between the two?

...Also if it's chambered in .223 only then 5.56 is a no-go right?

5.56 or .223. The internet will tell you that if you 5.56 in a .223 bad things will happen. If this was true there would be a million pictures all over the internet . of blown up .223 that fired a 5.56 round.

Too much choice is worse than not enough... The SPS Tactical is nice, so are the SPS Varmint and VSF. If you want to go the Magpul route get a SPS whatever you want and drop it into a Hunter 700 stock with DBM kit, best bang for the buck by far. Next up is the 700 Police followed by the 700 5R, better barrels, but more expensive as they come with H&S stocks. I've had very good experiences with the SPS Varmint and 5R so your budget will dictate your final choice. If I were to do it all again in .223, I would get a 5R 24", drop it into a Hunter 700 with DBM, and sell the H&S stock on the EE. Be forewarned that the Hunter 700 comes with a .308 mag, it won't fit .223. You'll need something like an MDT .223 mag to make it all work. Well more like 4 or 5 mags...

I have the 16.5" in a MDT LSS chassis, it shot ok, 1 MOA to a bit under with factory ammo, I put a custom 22" barrel on it now and while not a fair comparison accuracy wise against the longer custom barrel, but I find it more stable now, not that it kicked but would jump to the side a bit on the bench, now doesnt. It's also not as loud, with the 16.5" no way I would have took a shot without ears on, now I would and have with my hood up and without ringing ears.

Long story short, if we lived in a free country where we could use suppressors I would have kept the 16.5" that's what it was built for, but we don't so I went with a bit longer barrel. If the laws ever change I'll buy a reciever and build the 16.5" but won't hold my breath on that happening, likely wasting my time keeping the barrel even.

Oh I also went 1-8 twist on the 22" vs 1-9 on the 16.5.
