Any of these available in Canada? (Modern copies, not original)

"In the years following the Civil War, the black powder firearms maker also manufactured a carbine version of the 1858 New Army, the 1858 Target Carbine, in smaller numbers."

You could order one from any dealer that handles Uberti products for example Shooter's Choice in Waterloo Ontario... it may take a while for it to show up. I have an older one that has a brass trigger guard and butt plate and the wood is not as nice but it is fun to shoot. You get used to the blast of particles in the face every time it goes off.:sok2

Skinny 1950 - nice looking shooter there.

However do you always keep your forward arm behind the cylinder gap or wear a (kevlar) sleeve guard? I've read some horror stories bout these.

If you support your trigger hand with the other one there is no problem, the butt-plate has two fairly sharp points on it which leads me to shoot if off my upper arm rather than shoulder, eye protection is mandatory as your face is pretty close to the cylinder.
With a full chamber of Goex FFFG and a .454 round ball it averages about 1200 Feet/Second.
These carbines are called Remington 1858 due to the similarity with the 1858 New Army but were not produced until 1865-1866.
