Huh. Maby he was shooting Grouse with Shot loads 
Or Rattle snakes.
No reason you could not use shot loads in a percussion Revolver.
just use a wax plug or Soap plug after the shots put ontop of the Charge and a Cardbord wad.
Not sure if the Recoil would cause the wads to come loose and the shot come out but if the plugs were tight it should work.
I seen a Cartridge 45 long colt set up like that.
Haveing a smooth bore it would be a deadly shot pistol with that long barrel.

Is it possible the rifling is just horrible leaded??
Maybe it was made a smoothbore to aid in cleaning??
If not A smooth bore should not really effect accuracy within dueling range.
