Remington Baby Carbine ?????

I have this Remington and was told it is a Baby Carbine. I would like this verified and would also like to know the value. On top of the tang it reads: Remington Arms Company Ilion, N.Y. Pat. May ??1864, May 7th June 11th
Nov12th Dec 24th 187? dec ?? 1872 Sept 9th 1873 Jan 12th March 18th 1874
There is a "U" on the left side of the forearm band. Right side of forearm band has a 1.5" crack, would is sound and crack does not look like it goes all the way thru. The rest of the wood is in good condition. Barrel has scratches from removal of forearm band. Flip up rear site with the numbers 3 and 6. Gun functions great and shoots. It is .44-.40 cal. Length of barrel including chamber is 20". Bore is dark but you can see the rifling. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Thats a very sweet little rifle. And I'll admit that I'm jealous. I don't know a lot about the specifics of the different variants but I do know that there are several books out there on the history of the Remington rolling blocks. And also a couple of websites.

It looks to me like a Number 2 action saddle carbine in quite good condition. I'd love to find a couple to build a .22 Hornet on. Would also be fun to shoot with reduced loads or black powder as it is if the barrel will preform at all.
 
I had a look in my books and in Remington Rolling Block firearms by Konrad Schreier Jr. He stats the Baby Carbine was a special variation of a 1 1/2 action made with a 20 inch barrel in 44 40 and was mostly sold export to police forces with Central and South America buying a lot of them. Made from about 1890 to the first war 1914. List price in 1910 was $13.25 for the blued model and $14.44 for the nickeled model.
In Flaydermans 8th addition he states made in 1892 to 1902 and a few thousand made and calls them scarces $900 to $2400
