Remington, Browning or Weatherby?

I am about to spent about $1000 or so on a hunting rifle in a 338 cal.

I am having a hard time choosing between the Browning A bolt, Remington 700 and the Weatherby Vangard.

Any commnets that will help me make the right decision?

i've got a remington, its ok (i've actually started to warm up to it). too bad cz doesn't make a .338. I've heard nothing but good about the vanguards, for the money you can't really go wrong. chances are you will get better worksmanship than the remington as its japanese. my remmy had to go into the shop straight away for proper fitting. i've been hearing remingtons been putting out some real crap lately and that their quality control sucks. go with the vanguard.

One of the guys I shoot with just bought the Weatherby vangard in .270. Out of the box it shot great! So far we have not found a hanload it does not like. Over all I like it allot and will probably pick one up in the near future, just need to decide on a calibre.

I have used all three of your choices, and I am sure you wont be dissapointed with any of them.

I think like just about everyone has mentioned, between those three and in that given price bracket, the Rem 700 or the Vanguard would be great choices. Brownings have their fans I suppose, but while that 60deg bolt and overall craftmenship is quite good(barrels are from Japan I reckon), there's something about them that simply makes them seem less...

Rem 700s would be a better choice if you intend to do any modifications or changes over the years as they are more popular for aftermarket than the Weatherbys.

I had to make this decision a wile ago. I chose the Rem 700, only because of the detachable magazine.
 
Remington 700s are just... so... boring. Good guns no doubt, but boring. For a grand, I'd be cruising the EE for something a little more exotic. Sako, browing, ruger #1, or a custom gun of some sort.
 
The Winchester 70 is a very pretty rifle, and I love my Ruger #1. Neither of them are going to "get lost with the rest" in your range's gun rack!
 
I would buy the 700 without a qualm. The pratter about lousy craftsmanship and so on are highly overrated IMHO. I have bought several brand new Remington 700's recently, and they've all been top-notch, and every one of them shoots into MOA or less easily. The Vanguard is a decent rifle, but never feels as good in the hands to me as a 700 Classic or the new CDL. As for the A-bolt....had a couple, all that taught me was that I will never buy another. Of those choices I would choose the Browning without hesitation.
The A-bolt has a superb bolt design and the most versatile detachable mag system... and the quality is far and above the Vanguard or the Remington!
