Hey Guys, Is there somewhere that sells the remington custom shop rifles or do they have to be ordered right from remington? I was looking at them and I really took a liking to the Model 700 North American Custom. What are one of these things worth anyways?

You can order through any Remington dealer. My opinion is that you can have one custom built to your specs with a better barrel and a better stock, for the same or less money...
 
I have a number of 40x remington repeaters and single shot rifles with H2 barrels etc...it took 2 years plus to make it happen. But, the quality was worth the wait. you almost forget that you ordered from remington. Then I had to wait for mc-millan to build the stocks for them.
 
a friend of mine has remington custom shop rifle built in a left hand 7 rem mag .took him like 2 years to recieve it .
 
nice rifles I am sure, but like stated above, you could have a gunsmith do all that work and come out ahead $$$$ and less wait time, and have just as good of a end product
 
I bought a used Model 700 custom shop in 35 Whelen from "Casull" (member here) a number of years ago. It is an excellent rifle and extremely accurate. Fit, finish, and quality are excellent. It will be going moose hunting with me next week. I love it and would never sell it although I'm not sure I'd pay the bucks to get one new. It is nothing that any competant riflesmith couldn't make.
 
I agree with all the above. Especially if you plan to keep your gunsmith made rifle for the rest of your life.

However, the only advantage of a Remington Custom shop gun I can think of is if you ever decided to sell it, you would get a larger percentage of your outlay back.

But that is like walking down the aisle wondering how much the divorce is going to cost. (BTW, Love is Grand. Divorce is 500 Grand)

If you want to build it on a Rem 700, find a used rifle or bare action. Order a Gaillard barrel or maybe a shilen from Mysticplayer, in the calibre you want. Find a stock you like, gather all pieces and send it to a gunsmith. Guntech does nice work, as does Bill Leeper...

Action/used rifle - try to get one for under $600. (I'd go stainless, but blued is generally cheaper)
Barrel - ~$400
Stock - anywhere from $150-$750 depending on style, laminate or fiberglass, lightweight, etc...
Gunsmithing - $300-$500 - depending on details of the build

Should be able to build a nice one for $2000
 
Depends what you want to have too. Just a normal hunting rifle can be accomplished by quite a few guys. A best quality rifle is more specialized. Same with dedicated LR rigs.
 
In my opinion the factory customs are a better investment if you are going to a classic build with walnut and blued metal. Although it's true that various smiths in this country can put together a rifle most of them deal with stainless barrels and synthetic stocks, choosing a more classic rifle with checkered walnut stocks and blued metal narrows down your choice in smiths considerably. You can probably count in one hand how many can build a stock, checker and finish the wood and rust blue the metal.
As a rough estimate a quality walnut stock fully finished by one of the better smiths is going to cost between $1500 and @3000 plus the cost of the wood, Rust bluing $250-$400, barrel +/- 400, installation $250-$400, Action....?, bottom metal...?, trigger...?, sights...?, scope mounts...? Anyway you get the idea, you can build as cheap or as expensive as your pocket allows.
