I still have a lot to learn about shooting .... "long range" that is. Working my way up slowly. All shots were taken at 100m.

Range Results:

Temp: -3C with some slight snow.

Around 1pm it started snowing hard and I can't even see my targets at 300 meters. I just decided to pack up.

175 gr. SMK - 43gr Varget ... 5 shot group

168 gr Hornady BTHP Match - 42gr Varget ... 7 shot group

168 gr Hornady BTHP Match - 43gr Varget ... 5 shot group

I think it likes the Noslers!

168 gr Nosler Custom Competition HPBT - 44gr Varget ... 5 shot group

.300 win mag build coming soon!

very nice!

if i may toss in my 2cents, loose the mono pod and get a good squeeze bag for the rear! they are quicker, easier to use and oddly enough much more stable.

id give the 175smk a go with 42.5g varget, and close to 45... for some reason iv never seen a 5r that wasnt well below MOA when close to those 2 powder loads.. especially if youre .015 off the lands... but thats to long to mag feed

Looks pretty, but still not shooting so great.
Sorry if I come across as a dark cloud but you (and half the folks on here) would be much further along if you hock some of those fancy accessories and use the cash to replace the factory barrel with a match quality barrel, followed with a good bedding job and some load development.

What's your worry, you got about 750.00 in the rifle and 250.00 on the scope, plus you sold that other stuff to help a little.

Looks great. Excited to see KP's. Only seen cell photos so far.

Anything else planned? Looks good to shoot as is.

I've been a growing fan of guns pictured without the sunshade. Personal preference but it would likely look better and perform slightly better provided you arent shooting into space. =)

Nice rig but ... 19lbs is completely ridiculous for that type of set up ... is it the stock ? I don't see where the weight is ?

Nice rig...those stocks look like a nice blend of features..
I like the Noslers as well and my generic load is exactly what you have there....shoots great out of several rifles.
As mentioned, try it with a good rear bag....the mono-pod is a bit rigid and can create kind of a bounce if you will...just food for thought.

Or he can keep all that fancy stuff, and cement his divorce by getting that match quality barrel :)

I don't know much about precision bolt rifles, but I found that a .920 heavy barrel tightened up my groups in my 10/22 by a noticeable margin, even though I was using cheap ammo. Will I see a similar margin of improvement with a heavy barrel on a bolt gun?

Also, question about bedding - is it still necessary to bed the rifle when using a chassis system like the AI one, or Cadex or XLR? Not sure what the JAE system is supposed to be like, but people have said you should bed rifles like the Savage 10TR, Remington 700 Police or even the 700 R5 which have an aluminum bedding block.

Back to the OP, nice looking set up, haven't tried the mono-pod, but I use a squeeze bag myself and it seems to work.

It's a nice looking rifle, but I came in to empathize with your wife problems. My mantra is 'please get home before she checks the mail, please get home before she checks the mail' or alternately 'please don't show up on her day off, please don't show up on her day off'. ;)

Don't be discouraged, my first tack driver was a rem 700p tweeked by ATRS. After some load development it and my spotter received a second place in my first competition. There's nothing wrong with your set up, just be patient. Rick and company have been my go to for all my questions. I have a number of customs since the rem that cost twice as much, but would not hesitate to use it for my backup rifle. Good luck.

Nice rig. I have a 5R in 223 and love it (in a choate stock btw).

Leave that barrel alone! The 5R milspec already has an excellent barrel and it would prolly be the last thing to change imho.

+1 on losing the rear m-pod. It looks like it should be a great thing on paper, but on any kind of hard bench surface it tends to cause more movement than you would think. I had one on my Savage 110BA and found my groupings were getting worse with it on, so off it came. It was subtle, initially it helped calm down vertical spread, but worsened horizontal spread, as the point of contact with the bench is basically a hard rounded ball end. If it were a sharp point, it may be a little better, but I never tried that. Adjusting was a pain as you have to undo the locking ring, turn, then tighten the locking ring. Waaaaay easier and better results with a rear sandbag/rest of some kind.

I could see it being pretty heavy, especially with that chassis, bipod, mpod and scope. What's the twist on that barrel?

Thanks and Cheers guys.

Yup, still learning my way around this new rig.

+1 on the monopod. I found that out early and it's totally useless. A small bean bag is what I will be using next time. As for a match barrel, I'll shoot the heck out of the factory barrel for now.

She ended up a little heavy with the bipod, monopod, scope and was very surprised about the significant weight of the ATRS scope mount. Even the chassis alone have some weight on it. In a way it's sort of good. Helps tame the recoil more of the 308 .... not that the 308 recoil is really that bad.

Barrel twist is 1:11.25

Cheers

Nice setup up, but I do have to say I like my JAE colours more! :p
Unlike you I wasn't smart enough to preemptively order a few spacers to increase the length of pull.
My 700 5R loves 175 smks with 45 grains of Varget (a max load so work up to it). I am currently on the fence about picking up a rear monopod. I think it would be handy when shooting from a bench or a nice flat surface. However, I spend almost no time shooting in such environments. I will likely pick up an Accushot Atlas Bipod in the near future to replace my Harris.
Have you tried any 155 Lapua Scenars from your 5R? I am going to begin working on a load with XBR and 155s soon here.
Happy shooting and I hope you enjoy you JAE-700!

very nice set up. As for the divorce, I guess I'm lucky, my wife and I get allowences every paycheque for our hobbies, if I want something that I don't have cash for all I hear it "honey, it's your Visa, so it's your problem"... we each have our own Visa along with the joint, she doesn't know what I spend and I don't know what she does, we're responsible enough (her more so than me) that she just shakes her head when things arrive in the mail for me

She won't find out for a while .... I hope. co'z I did not use any credit card to complete this build.

Was saving for the last 3 years hoping to get another sport bike, but the Precision Rifle bug bit me and now I had the itch to build one. Used the saved funds for the rifle instead of getting another bike. Oh well .... I guess no bike for me yet but at least I have a rifle hehehehe LOL

Started with a budget Savage build and now this.

J

Very nice.... Interesting colour for the stock.

If you are worried about wifey, me thinks a cadex build will put you over the top :)

Have fun...

Jerry

You now understand that "budget Savage build" is just industry code for FIRST HIT OF CRACK!!!

Enjoy... you have a great looking rig going.

Just curious how stable that Sinclair bipod is. All that articulation - does it lock up tight?
