hey guys if you had to choose between Remington express ammo and you had a choice between 300gr or 405gr for a lever action 45-70 wth 22 inch barrel, which would you pick? the faster 300 or the slower harder hitting 405 for black bear?

I would pick the 405's. I have killed and been around a pretty good pile of animals killed using that bullet.

But then again if "I" was only shooting factory loads out of a 45-70, I wouldn't own a 45-70...

I want to get into reloading in the near future, I have done some research on the subject and will get one of those "kits" that wholesale sports sells. I will decide between Lee or RCBS when I have the money, I understand its gonna be at least a 4-$500 investment after taxes and my dies and powders, primers, bullets.

Olympia, I should have read your OP more thoroughly.

What I said wasn't fair to the question you were asking, If I had to choose between those two factory offerings I would go with the 405's. Black bears are thin skinned game and easy to kill, Either will do the job just fine as long as the distance is within reason for the factory 45-70 loads. My choice would be the 405's but that is just my personal preference after being around quite a large pile of 45-70 kills.

^^^^^What he said my lee kit has reloaded thousands of 45\70 rounds.. I added a electric scale to it and am still using the same kit years later with no intentions of upgrading. Id choose the 405 but the 300s will kill as well. by a box of each and see what one is more accurate.

Lee challenger press 50 th kit $120. 45/70 dies from lee $35. Case guide $3. Any manual will work. $15-60. Several powders work well. Best of luck

I found the 50th anniversary kit at wss for 189 but am waiting to find one for 120ish like you suggest, I thought reloading kits cost upwards of 600 dollars and thus never bought one before and would comment about saving for it lol people must have thought I was a broke ass, If I had known of this 50th anniversary kit before I would have gotten into reloading a very long time ago, anyhow never too late and I cant wait to start now and combined with the fact that factory 45-70 ammo is 3 bucks a shot...ouch

Fsreloading. They ship to Canada fast reliable great and I mean amazing service. I buy all my lee stuff there. No issues. I use my lee kit for several rifles. I have 12 quick lock bushings but never use them. I've loaded about 1500 rounds on mine with no issues. Just buy a good manual and read the basics. The reloading forum is here for any questions. Better equipment costs a lot more but to me a single stage press is a single stage press. I don't care if it's red blue green or orange. The lee powder measure is the best I've used. The beam scale is very accurate. More so then the digital scale I use but I figure I can't shoot good enough to tell a .1gr difference so I use a faster mini scale. You can get more toys as you go

Kit. $120
Dies. $35 each caliber Ave
Manual. 20
Tumbler $65
Chrony. $120

Have fun

45/70 is a re loaders dream. Mice to moose to elephant
