I bought one a month ago and put 400 rounds through it. The recoil is very soft and it functions flawlessly. The differences between the 1100 and the new g3 are you cant interchange barrels, inproved gas system and titanium coated receiver and moving parts. It comes with 5 pro bore chokes and a nice case. You can only use the pro bore chokes in it. I was going to go for a berreta but this fit me better and i dont regret it. The gun is very easy to strip and doesnt seem to get very dirty . I had the same decision to make as OldFart and I went the other direction. I already have an older Rem 1100 (thanks to a great CGN guy) and when I looked at the G3 I decided it wasn't different enough from my old 1100 to give me anything new. Yes, it has all the great improvements that OldFart mentioned, but I felt like if I bought it, I would just own an OLD 1100 and a NEW 1100. I found that the fit of the Beretta 391 Optima suited me better, and it is definitely different. I have only put 2 boxes through it but so far I'm extremely impressed.

Zenmagic has it right. Shoulder/try as many different brands as you can. I shoot a Beretta 686 Sporting as my main gun but I back it up with my trusty Rem. 11-87 Premier Skeet. I've shot several 391's and they are truly impressive. However the 1100/11-87's are very well designed, quite reliable as long as you keep them clean, very simple takedown, don't have to mortgage the house to own one and there are millions of parts available when something breaks....and something always does. I'm leaning heavily toward a G3 for my next gun.
Sounds like a great gun! I do have a 1187 now and it works great and shoulders very well but i am interested in getting a G3 the only problem where i'm located there are no gun shops anymore so we don't have the chance to actually try one out,I have to depend on info like you guys supply me with! Tks again!
I bought one a few months ago, great gun, nice looks AND shoot 3" shells (that's the main difference with the regular 1100), I haven't tried the 3" shells yet.
Very light recoil, took my 13 and 16 years old daughters to the range and no problems or complains about the recoil, although the gun itself is to big and heavy for them (5 and 5-4 tall and not used to shotguns), but fits me perfectly (6ft).
