I recently bought a newer remington gamemaster 760 in .308. From what I can tell it was made in 1977. Anyway, somewhere along the line the original iron sights were removed in favor of just a scope. I want to put a set of fiber optic sights back on it along with see through scope rings and a better scope. Any suggestions guys as to what I should get? Im starting with just the barrel and the screws so I may have to get the original sight ramps as well. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?
A good quality low scope will negate the need for useless see-thu mounts. The sights could be replaced with orig Remington sights if you want to fill empty holes.

here's mine ......

Good advice. Those see thru rings work but not nearly as good as a low mounted scope.

I guess I could just try with the scope to start with. Not like I'm buying things for it I wouldn't be using anyway. I do like having the option of using my open sights as well as the scope depending on the situation I'm in. I can always add the rings and sights later if I find I miss them... Do the see through rings really affect the accuracy of the scope that much? I have the same setup (1" weaver see through rings with factory fiber optic sights) on my T/C black diamond.

The see thru rings don't affect the accuracy of the rifle but there are other issues with them in my opinion. For one they place your face too high on the stock for best use of the scope and most modern rifles are stocked too straight for best use with iron sights anyway. Looking through a small tunnel to use the open sights is fine at midday but not so good at dawn or dusk. Most are aluminum and stand up high by design and so are more flimsy and prone to being knocked around, changing your point of impact with the scope. I agree with SuperCub, put a nice low power variable on it and go hunting.

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I'll go with just a good low power scope for now and see how I like it. Any suggestions on a good scope?

The rifle already has a weaver style 1pc base and rings on it. It had a Ruko 4x20 scope on it when I bought it. I was looking at the Leupold VX-1 in 2-7x28 or 2-7x33. Cabelas didn't list a low power option in the VX-2 and the VX-3 is a bit out of my price range. I haven't really shopped around too much to see if anyone else carries a low power VX-2. Is the VX-2 that much better than the VX-1?

Have you shot an animal with the irons through the see-through rings?

No one i know who has see-throughs has ever actually used the irons. They all go to scope.

For what its worth, I have a Leupold 2x-7x and have never ever had an issue finding an animal. Its a great scope and sits parked on 2x 99% of the time.

I agree with the idea of a low mounted, low power scope on your 760.These rifles point slick and fast, like a shotgun. You will find a low scope easier and faster to use than either a high scope or see through rings. The holes left from your sights can simply be filled with 6-48 plug screws designed for this purpose. You will like that gun.

Last year was the first season I had my muzzle loader set up with the see through rings and I didn't get a chance to shoot at anything lol. My uncle has them on his 7600 and likes them, but everyone is different. I will try a good low power scope and see what it's like.

I will give that a go, and the holes are already plugged with screws. One less step for me to do.

Ask your uncle how many deer hes shot with irons using the see throughs.

I'm sure I know what the answer will be to the above question.
Follow the advise mentioned earlier and you will have a very accurate and reliable set up that will fill your freezer.
If affordability is an issue, there are lower priced optics out there that will also serve you well.

The Leupold VX-1 is well within the budget as is the VX-2. I will do some shopping around and see what I can find. Deer season isn't for a while yet, but I'd like to get some practice time in over the spring/summer.

Buggy,

I have the same gun, its been my go to deer rifle for the last 10 years. At my camp I do A LOT of dogging, and I decided I wanted to use the same gun whether I was pushing deer or sitting on a stand. My solution was a 1.5-4.5X scope and Leopold QR quick release rings in case I wanted to take the scope off. The scope is parked at 1.5x ninety-nine percent of the time and in a decade I have only removed the scope once (and no loss of zero). This gun has killed deer running, standing, point-blank and out to 150 yards.

A nice Bushnell 3200 Elite 2-7x32 would work good for you. This one is for sale on the EE.
