what exactly is the problem with the j-lock
i've searched the forums and cannot find a reason
only a couple of posts saying it sucks
does it impede accuracy, reliability, or just cosmetic
any reply would be much appreciated
BTW i just purchased a rem 700 sendero with the jlock
haven't shot it yet though
 
It does not do anything unless it goes on accidently when you have the safety engaged. If you don't notice it and you need to shoot all of a sudden, it will be locked and you will need the key to unlock it (if you are carrying it).

Have there been any cases where the j-lock has actually locked itself? Or is this just in theory?
It would definitly suck if it happened while shooting game but is it even possible

Apparently there have been some issues with them, accidental discharges and so on, as Remington has discontinued their use. I have found far better trigger feel with replacing them, I suggest rather than the factory replacement some of the aftermarket units which have better springs, hence better locktime, for the few extra dollars
 
I haven't personally seen any misfires. The system adds more material to the action. As on any Remington action upgrading to a Tubb speed lock system or a quality Gre-Tan system (most economical) is a good idea if you want to improve the action and decrease lock time. We stock both systems.
 
any rough idea how much this upgrade would cost
using the aftermarket ones suggested
also whats it like replacing the spring ie: special tools, etc?
