I've got a Remmy LRT and am sick of the bind mag. I'm looking into converting it to a release mag and with there Bunch of different manufacturers, can someone tell me some of the pro/con's of the one's out there???
Ones of interest are:
Badger
Wyatt's
Others???

Get a CDI precision or something similar. All DBM's are going to be pretty much the same, and there is no excuse to either charge or pay upwards of $400 for a magazine kit. Whatever is is, just make sure the system accepts AICS magazines. Anything else is a waste of time and money.

Stiller also makes a good one. I doesn't require much in the way of inletting on a standard BDL type Remington 700.

The inletting is the biggest issue...hard to find somebody that can do a good job of this. I have had some done and haven't been happy with any of them. To do the right job, a CNC program is needed...Badger will do it for you for very little $$, however they cannot guarentee shipment back, as they are not set up for that kind of export. I am going to send a spare stock to them and hope for the best.
You can also consider HS Precision...it is very nice stuff, but very pricey. No inletting required on HS stocks, but very minor work may be required on others (B&C etc), but you can do that.

All short action bottom metal to take AI mags (that I have seen) need to have the stock inlet for the wider mag well needed for ai mags. Some long action will drop in or come very close to dropping in a bdl inlet. Pacific tool and gauge makes Newman, Stiller, Wyatts, military contract as well as there own line of stealth bottom metal. Some of the PTG long action will drop into bdl some has a badger M5 foot print. All of the short action needs the mag well opened up, some will fit badger m5 inlets, others like stiller are close to bdl inlet but still need the mag well area opened up. The best I have used is Canadian made Vbull, it also one of the more pricey in the 400$ range. It drops into long action bdl, short action requires inletting. Its a bit complicated and pain in the aZZ at times especially when I order stocks and even PTG can't tell me which inlet to order for their CIP length 338 lapua bottom metal. Mcmillan thinks it will be badger M5 but they have not got a sample yet it seems.

Wyatts drops into s/a inlets but uses their own mag system, it works well.

I order most s/a stocks in badger m5 inlets since ptg atlas and badger will all fit

Long action I order either bdl or badger m5 inlets and it easy enough to find metal to fit.

Stiller has some advantages to their design as seen below. Since the stiller has regular bdl tangs and an overhanging lip on the mag well it can be inlet by hand/dremel and be done with professional looking results. I have ordered several in with stocks to match. I have some tac 30 a/w actions ordered to take advantage of the double stack capabilites

  • Billet aluminum construction for strength Mil Spec Type 3 hard anodized for uncompromised performance
  • Flared magwell to quickly guide battle proven Accuracy International magazines for flawless performance and quick changes in competition
  • Computer analyzed truss pattern reduces weight will still retaining strength and torsional stiffness
  • Material above and below the stock line much better control the magazine and allow a better fit while still being aligned
  • 10 round 223, 5 and 10 round 308 centerfeed and 10 round 308 double stack mags available. The double stack mags wont work in the standard Remington action, but are perfectly suited for dedicated actions like our new TACTICAL 30 A/W.
  • Works with all commonly available triggers
  • Exact fit pillars and screws included to ensure a perfect fit and easy installation
  • NO SPECIAL INLET is required on the tang ends like our competition has. This will fit into a standard BDL bottom inlet in most stocks with their pillars if they use them (must meet remington specified depths). The only cutting needed is around the mgazine box. We have also added material in this area such that a high precision cut is not needed. The overhang covers up small imperfections in the cut area.
  • The short action DBM is currently available with the long action coming soon

So if I get a system the needs inletting who would be a good smith to send it to??

I can sell you Wyatts drop in, stiller, newman or ptg stealth but am not installing any right now. As someone mentioned above, lots of people will say they can install it but there are some really sloppy looking jobs that I have seen as well. I was told by a guy who installs quite a bit it is normal (for him!) to use epoxy to fill in the voids around the mag well and the tangs ends, not bad if you are painting the stock but if not looks like crap...

I just finished installing a PT&G (Israeli) unit that I acquired from juanvaldez. It does require significant inletting to fit it to a BDL pattern stock. This unit accepts AI pattern magazines. I bought ones made by C Products from Marstar. These require a little clearance notch to be cut bottom dead center in the feed ramp, to allow bullet tips in the center feed position to clear. Feeds reliably, the receiver still works with a standard Remington BDL magazine if desired. The unit comes with aluminum pillars, I made new steel ones to pull the magazine up as close to the receiver as possible; could have shortened the ones that came with it. The trigger guard unit is well made. I am quite satisfied with it.
The HS system is good. They just changed their magazines. I do not believe that the new magazines fit the older pattern of bottom metal.

If you watch some of the US forums or even ebay, Atlasworx makes a decent DBM that can be had for $80-100. I inletted mine myself on a Bridgeport. AI mags and <$100 installed. Works great.

<$100 installed hmmm? ...did you include the price of the Bridgeport milling machine?

The HS Bottom metal will drop in to and fits quite nicely in an HS Precision stock. Other BDL inlets may require modification.
It is expensive though and can be hard to find mags sometimes. The 10 round mag rattles a bit on the Gen I, but the Gen II I believe locks on front and rear of the mag....I have yet to handle the Gen II. Nice solution for .223....feeds better as a center feed.

Kit is also available right from remington to easily convert most model 700's with the exception of the hogue stock models. Price is around $80cdn. Just ask your local dealer. Easy to install yourself

Have you actually done this yourself? Remington does not list the bottom metal (from the 700sps DM) in their parts store and when I contacted them they replied that they do not sell it separately and to go buy something from Brownells.

PTG DBM available shortly. Let me know and yes, we can install.

There is quite a bit of work ...but a cleaner install into a blind mag stock.

PS when it comes to inletting DBM, it takes alot of time and set up to do it right. We have had the displeasure of resolving several botched jobs lately so be careful if going by price alone. We are not cheap and have no intention of dropping our prices. The manhours to do it right justify the time. We have had very happy customers.....especially those that had to pay twice.

I had a local dealer order the part. He told me about the remington upgrade after i asked about availibility of hs precision parts. Maybe a dealer only part? I don't know

Please send me a PM or email. I am not supposed to discuss work on an open forum.

For simplicity, it depends on what you are trying to merge and how much work is there. We do not have a 1 price fits all anymore. Way too many variables.... and mods.
