Remington model 14's

Noel, congrats on a nice buck!

Your .25 is in a little better shape than mine...:D Thinking we might give it a going over and re-blue...

buckbrush,
the only thing I have found that works this year is still hunt, and by that I mean painful slow still hunting. If I get 30yds in the bush in an hours time I am lucky. Not a minute after we crossed the fence two deer came running blind at us until the swirling wind gave us away. They stopped about 20yds if that and vanished without a sound. Suspect they were bucks as the does make so much rukus when they vacate.

We were standing there trying to figure out what to do and me waiting for shooting light for my iron sights, we took five steps and this other buck also took five steps... out onto the line. I had heard his movements ealier but could not locate him. Good timing!

Chinook wind is you friend this year, just pray it doesn't change direction. Set your foot down slow as you can, heel first and roll your foot down, the leaves will crackle and still make sound, but you sound more like a squirrel or [insert your favorite bush pet here] animal scrounging. Hope you have good balance. LOL
Even when I spot deer at close range this year I have been able to take another step and they don't really take notice.

Other than for tracking I much prefer no crunchy snow to walk on. Having said that I would have put my tag on that buck last weekend too. Put six more hours in looking, I am certain he's there.

Thanks Brad,

This one nearly fell into my hands last January. Having getting a couple before that just didn't fit the bill I was wondering if any could be found. The fellow who sold it to me had never fired it. It was his Dad's IIRC, after the saddle scabbard ride up from the States I don't think it saw much use, which is obvious. He handed me a box of 1940's(?) Green w/red label Remington ammo with it saying this was from his Dad also. What a travesty he had no one to pass it down to. Certain the government was going to take it away from him he flogged it. This one is on the never ever sell list for certain.

Nuggets gun was pretty rough when I got it. Suprisingly the thing shoots very well for such a rough bore. He refinished the stock after filling in the dry out cracks and then I refit the special order cresent plate, it came out very nice. His plan was to use it as a take down stow away gun for shooting big putty tats. Figures irons are better at close range than his scoped semi was with the last episode........ The way they are running around this year he might just get one too.

My grandpappy with his Remmy and a wolf.

Another of him and my Great Uncle, wish I could find that old pump. Went to one of his cousins I think, I should hunt it down.

Is Nugget's a .25 also? I should really get one in a .30 for myself...:D

The .25 here has the cresent butt and had a tang sight at one time, but not now...Got some of that old green/red ammo here too...

What cal was that one Joe?
And yes you should track it down!

Not sure Noel, I think I know where it is, my Uncle told me that one of my grandfathers cousins has it. Should see if I can grab it off him.

Was offered my Great Grandfathers old percussion SXS shotgun last year but still haven't picked it up. I think it would look pretty cool hanging up on the wall behind his old chair that now resides in my deer camp.

It is a 25 Rem as well. :) I was offered quite a few 30's and looked at a 35 before I found out the actual caliber Leif used. I told myself I would find one after I had all the puzzle figured out. It took alot of digging.....literally.:ninja:

Joe, sounds like a great addition to the deer camp.
The fellow who sold me this rifle has the same kind of shotty and was trying to sell it too. My Great Grandfather's double 12 bore is up by Edmonton but I doubt I have any chance of procuring it. A nice photo shoot would be nice.
Hope you can track that 14 down.

I have a model 14 in 30 rem. It was passed down to me from my grandfather. since there are so many of you here that own model 14's I figure I can get a pretty good response to this. When I put the slide forward to chamber a round, it locks in place but if I apply pressure to pull it back, even though it does not move the trigger will not pull, or sometimes it sticks. As long as I put a forward force on the forestock the gun shoots smooth, without it the trigger kinda catches. It's not a huge deal, but it is kinda annoying. Have any of you experienced anything like this??? And is there any way to fix the problem without paying the big bucks to take it into a gunsmith???

Stevie, have you tore it down to give it a good cleaning? There are a lot of parts moving at the same time and close tolerances in there, the guck that builds up over the years could be causing some engagement issues, stopping it from hitting home.

The first one I got was like that but there were other issues too so I just sent it back to the buyer who didn't really want to sell it in the first place. The other two lock up tight but you have to use what I would call 'positive pressure' when cycling the action. Do it like you mean buisness. If I cycle mine gently it has a tendancy to hang up.

Keep us posted. I have some manuals at home I can try to dig out and see if it has any suggestions for trouble shooting.

The bolt on the models 14 & 141 locks in place with a piece that pushes up into the top of the receiver. Some of the 14's that where shot and cycled a lot get some freeplay where the bolt locks up and will move back slightly when you put pressure on the pump and the trigger won't pull. I have never seen anyone get theirs repaired but I would imagine a competent gunsmith could rebuilt the worn area.

I am not sure it could be a bit of both. It was a local old timer that is a gun fanatic as well as his father before him that was explaining it to me. I took my 25 Rem out to show it to him as his father used one for years as a deer gun and he showed me how to check them by pulling back on the pump, something I had never heard of before.

Another thing of interest he said was to never drill them for a top mount scope base as he had seen some crack right down the top of the reciever afterwards because of the way the bolt locks up. He said there was a side mount for them that was seldom used but was much better as it didn't weaken the reciever.

I'd suspect the receiver but I spose both could wear. Breech bolt just seems like a much harder material.

As to the scope mounts, to speak of such things on a fine little gun like this is sacrilage! ;)

Mind if I ask what kind of load you use with yours?

There will not be any scopes on any of mine.

I have never shot the rifle yet. I have 107 brass that the old fellow gave me and a set of dies and a box of 117gr hornady RN sitting on the shelf for over a year now and have never gotten around to loading some and trying it out. It is shameful, I have even been thinking I should sell the whole outfit to someone who would do it justice! Got to stop buying new rifles and use some of the ones I have.

What load do you use in yours?

I'll try to check my data tonight shortaction. I do use the same bullets as what you have over enough IMR 3031 to go 2360 IIRC. IF I'm wrong I'll edit this post. I am trying to get a load that cycles in my Model 8A 25 Rem as well but no dice yet.

If anyone has a 14 they want a MFG date I can help a bit with the early ones. Remington Society website can help with the later ones.

This coming from a guy who puts a cheap nylon sling on a fine classic rifle

This coming from a guy who puts a nice leather sling on his plastic gun......;)

I forgot I had that sling for you Noel. Drop me a line and I'll get it to you

Do you guys know how easy it is to put on a better sight, maybe a peep sight. I want something that goes where the preexisting sights are, I don't want to drill into the gun
