I have recently purchased a Remington model 1894 sxs. I am interested in shooting the gun, however, there is some pitting in the barrels. Wondering if that will create a huge safety problem, or just a bit of a performance reduction. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Won't affect performance, could affect safety if the pitting is bad.
Your shotgun likely does not have 2 3/4" chambers; shorter chambers are more probable. My M1894 has the short chambers.
No one here will be able to tell you that your gun is safe to shoot. A careful inspection of the gun would be necessary, and even then it will be your decision if you choose to shoot it.

Thanks for your info. I believe i will have a gunsmith look at this old shotgun before i consider shooting it now. I did not realize that the chambers may not even be long enough to shoot 2 3/4" shells, I would imagine a gunsmith could tell me if it does quite easily though. Thanks again.

if the gunsmith says it's goodtog, get yourself some Magtech brass, wads, shot, and black powder and have some fun!!

I have the same gun, with 2 3/4 chambers, but you need to confirm what yours is.... Magtech brass is an ALL brass casing, they are pricey but if you look after them, and don't step on them, they will last darn near forever... The "cool factor" of this brass is unbeatable! It is definitely on my list.
I shoot black powder loads only out of my gun using Federal paper hulls, it works good but you only get about 3 reloads out of a hull...
I have shot Hogdon 777 with Winchester AA hulls and plastic wads (Winchester Red WAA12r's) and it works good too, but it isn't the same as true black powder.
