Remington Model 673 J-lock ISS

Has anyone changed the J-lock firing pin assembly in their short, short-action Remington 673 rifles? If so did the bolt then operate smoother, or any other benefits other than getting rid of the j-lock? I have no key for it so if it does screw up it needs to be replaced anyway. Brownell's has a Model 700 short-action assembly available but does not indicate if it fits the slightly shorter Model 7, Model 673 short-actions.
 
I have used them in my 700s, and yes, I feel the assembly operates more smoothly than the original remington part. That said, I have never seen or done so with the 673.
 
The 673 will accept the Model Seven part, not the short action 700 part. It is after all a Model Seven action with a different name.

Some of the J-lock springs rub the inside of the bolt so a new assembly will make bolt lift smoother.

In theory ignition may be more consistent also.

Gary Eakin may have the gretan units in stock.
PTG also sells their own version and will ship (And although I’m not a ptg fan, these should work)
 
I looked it up and Remington quit installing j-locks in their rifles in 2005 - I couldn't find anybody with a Model 7 replacement other than Remington Country Canada, so I have a factory replacement coming in the mail. It will be interesting to see if the gun shoots tighter groups with faster ignition.

Ya their pay system sucked big time, but I ordered the blued assembly yesterday - $98.62 plus $4.93 tax, free shipping over $35.00. Canada Post shipped today from Quebec.
 
Well, a happy ending to this story and a simple upgrade - not much for fancy tools around here so I used the edge of a full ammo can to spring the pin enough for the penny, it took less than a minute to change springs. Bolt is very smooth now, like all the other 700's and 7's i have owned without the j-lock. Easy to see why Remington quit using it.

LOL, yes RJ I am in full agreement with the POS comment and it's always nice to learn something new with help from good gun nuts. I haven't fired the gun yet but wonder if Rembo's comment "In theory ignition may be more consistent also." will lead to better accuracy with my reloads now.
