I just traded for my first ever Remington rifle. It's a Model 7 SS chambered to 7mm-08.
This thing is tiny !! It has the J-lock, which I understand can cause problems with accuracy, but I will be addressing that in the future.
I mounted up a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 and am giving the bore a good dose of Wipe-out. First patches came out pretty blue/black colored, so I'm assuming the gun probably has never been cleaned, although the bore looks nice and shiny , no pits or chatter .
Gonna zip on out to my shooting spot and give it a try to see how well my bore sight went. 1000005016.jpg
 
I see the previous owner put on a limbsaver. You will need that, those little rifles kick! I have the same model, same calibre. Mine did not shoot very well with the original plastic stock. Good enough for deer hunting though. That’s a great tree stand rifle.
 
Still have one in 7 SAUM, they're good rifles. Yours is in a great cartridge, I have two 7mm-08 rifles (788 carbine and 700 VLS) and a 7mm-08 AI built on a Rem 600. If I could have only one hunting cartridge (blasphemy!!) It would be the 7mm-08. It simply does so many things well with varying bullet weights. - dan

The problems with the J Lock are #1 aesthetics there Fugly ! #2 better not lose the key if it’s locked or your Fuked till u get another one ! #3 the firing pin spring is different then a reg m7 one and it’ binds up along the inside of the bolt wall and slows down the firing pin speed . Can effect accuracy al thou there not super accurate rifles anyhow so may or maybe not show up on the target ! RJ
 
Gonna need a sling on that one to keep it from flying away in a light breeze. Great rifle there. 7mm-08 is just that little bit alternative that makes it interesting. Not super common but still factory available. Everyone loves the 7-08. And Model 7s are neat. I like a Model 700, and they are the standard for a reason, but 7's are just cooler.
 
Get rid of the J-loc. Purchase a new complete Gre-Tan bolt shroud with firing pin/spring assembly. Can order one from Gary Eakin at Bighorn Sales in Houston, BC. Super easy to install. The Gre-Tan assembly and pin/spring is way nicer than original. While you’re at it may as well order a TriggerTeck replacement as well.

This one doesn't kick hardly anymore than a .243 does! Surprised the hell out of me, as I thought because it's so light that it would have some bark to it. Maybe this is your old gun as the two loads I tried (Federal fusion 120gr and Hornady Amer/whitetail 139 Interlock) didn't impress me with the 3 in groups. Needs some tinkering, me thinks.

She would make a nice 358 Winchester, or a 284 Winchester with a KS stainless fluted barrel.......:)

Mine shot 3/4 -1 “ 3 shot groups repeatable with 120 TTSX loaded on top of H414. Also Sierra 120 and Speer 130 s .
I never shot any heavier . RJ
 
Nice rifle. I ended up eliminating the j-lok when the firing pin broke on mine. Good to hear there is a source here.

Another reason to change out that POS j lock before You miss a shot at a animal or a bear charges you 🤷🏼‍♂️

Extremely light factory barrels as the Model 7 and the Mountain rifles Remington offer are not condusive to good accuracy. If you can get under 1.5 inches for 3 shot groups at 100 yards be happy... that's all you need.

Some "J" locks can be engaged without the key, but they require the key to disengage them... pain in the ass... the majority of owners replace them with a conventional firing pin/shroud assembly.
 
My replacement came from Pacific tool and die I think was the name. Don't know if that's an option anymore but sounds like the options aren't too limited. Accuracy for mine is okay for the hunting distance I like. The stock has the pressure point in it. Might be the key for the light barrel
 
Nice rifle, mine is currently getting a KS stainless .308 win barrel installed and fitted into a wildcat ultra light stock, trigger tech upgrade as well. I have a model 700 mountain LSS in 7-08 and just put a youth stock on it for my kid. Found a really nice low recoil load for it with 139gr interlocks and ~38.5gr Varget (2550 fps). Give that a try if you are in the mood for tinkering, its not a fast load by any means but plenty for whitetail. Shoots 0.4" groups and my kid is smashing empty milk jugs at 200 m.
