Remington Model 7 vs 700

I found a good deal on a model 7 gun but dont know too much about them. It is a LS lightweight laminate in 308. How does it compare with a 700 in 308. I know its a 20" barreled gun. is this the only difference? Thanks!
 
It's a shorter/lighter action too IIRC. It might even have a shorter LOP.

It's a good action, although doesn't quite have hte same aftermarket as the 700, if that's a concern
 
i have a ss synthetic model 7 in 308. the action is about 1/2 inch shorter than a 700 and the stock is a little trimmer but lenth of pull i believe to be the same as a 700. the 7 is lighter and the barrel is shorter and only avalable in short cartriges. nice rifles once the trigger is adjusted.

The one Model 7 I shot extensively (.308 Win) never wanted to do much better than 2 MOA regardless of the handload.

A stark contrast to my 700 in 30-06, which is an honest-to-God sub-MOA rifle with several different loads.

Of course, this is all based on a rather limited sample size...
 
the Model Seven is a good rifle, just a shorter, lighter Model 700 basically. My friend has one in 308 and it will shoot around 1" with handloads, good enough
 
they have a barrel contour just like the 700 mountain rifles. if blasting away at the range is the main reason you're buying the Model Seven, you might not like how much the barrel heats up. If its for packing/hunting, the M7 is awesome
 
I've owned two, still own one. From that tiny sample size, I've had unbelievably good accuracy. Better than any M700 I've ever owned, out of the box.

Small samples, but the shortness and rigidity of the action would _seem_ to contribute to accuracy on all models. The new Model Seven CDL is also a handsome little gun...
 
They do have a shorter, stiffer action, so they should have more accuracy potential. The XP-100 (and XR-100) and a couple of their 40-X models are all based on the same action as the 7.
 
Remington Model 7 SS -7mm08 - trigger tuned

Speer 110TNT, COL 2.8", REM FL Brass, Varget - 48.2, FED 210, 5 Celcius, 3100 ft/sec, 0.324"-100 yd groups.

Nosler 120 BT, COL 2.8", REM Brass, Varget - 47.3, FED 210, 20 Celcius, 3140 ft/sec, Very Accurate. My son shot an antelope at about 500 yds, with this combination, bullet took out both lungs and exited.

Speer 160 Spitz BT, COL 2.765", REM FL Brass, H 4350 - 47.3 , FED 210, 5 Celcius, 2650 ft/sec, 0.3" - 100 yd groups. Shoots the same trajectory as most 308 loads with similar terminal energy. Has killed both moose & elk to 400 yds.

I had a Stainless Synthetic Model 7 inh 243.
It was a Tackdriver :)
Kinda wish my New 700 in 260 shot as well as that Lil 243 did :rolleyes:

The bases are not the same as the 700 if you have the newer Model 7 with two screw holes on the back of the receiver. I recommend Leupold STD TWO-PIECE BASES Mfr.#51256 SEVEN. I believe that earlier model 7's had only one screw hole at the back of the reciever. If you find a used one of these you will probably have to go to the STD ONE-PIECE Leupold Short Action mount.
