Howdy one and all...

My darling wife is in need of a rifle. After having patiently put up with me foisting my Lee Enfield mania on her for a few years, she and I have both noted that in fact, she is a much better deliberate shot than I. (So, when the revolution comes, she will be my long range cover as I move in close with the semi-auto on advance to contact!) :D

That said, we also have my SwissArms (which she does enjoy shooting, but not humping the mass around) in the house, and a large supply of 5.56mm ammo. Although she will put up with .303 noise and recoil, she much prefers the .223.

I would love to buy her a rifle of her own, that fits her 5'2" frame, and doesn't cause back strain to pack around. I would estimate that 99.5% of her shooting will be done on a range, and as such, I had considered one of the 20" barrelled Savage "tactical" bolt actions, but alas... No love finding a stock that fit her.

We did once grope a Rem Model 7 youth, and she enjoyed the fit / heft of the wee thing... I am concerned, however, that the light barrel might not be the optimum for range style round counts.

Comments, please, from those that might own one of the Model 7's? I appreciate that these little rifles are intended as "carry a lot, shoot a little", but would hope that they might do all right under sustained firing, if allowed to cool between rounds?

Thanks in advance!

I own a Model Seven Synthetic Stainless in 308. I love this gun and have carried it all over hell's half acre. Similar to mountain rifles, I find the Model Seven very accurate.

However, due to their skinny pencil barrels, they do heat up quickly and your groups will begin to open up rather fast. Mine is very accurate for the first two shots, maybe even to squeeze in a third. After that, the barrel is pretty warm it must be put down for a lengthy period of time in order to cool down and regain its original accuracy. (If you want to keep really tight groups)

If your wife is going to be using it 99.5% for range play, she will probably become frustrated with it because you just can't keep shooting and shooting these rifles. She will always be waiting for it to cool down. But they are very accurate when cold and that is what these rifles are meant for, to be carried alot and then blast away a couple shots at a four legged critter.

In my humble opinion I wouldn't recommend one for serious target use. However, they are hard to beat for a smaller statured person who wants a great all-weather hunting rifle. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy shooting mine from a bench too, but only in small doses.

Thanks for the responses, folks!

So, I guess my next question would be: Is there an aftermarket stock availabel for "youth" or "tiny wife" sized people that would fit an a Savage 10FPLE in .223, with the 20" barrel? (Although the short barrel seems to be discontinued).

Why not just cut the stock to make it fit her? If you are concerned about re-sale value, pick up a cheap stock on the EE forum when you go to sell.
